Keren Hayesod Argentina, also known as CUJA, is the Argentine chapter of Keren Hayesod - United Israel Appeal. It says that "el capítulo argentino es conocido también como CUJA y, desde 2025, decidió unirse al nombre de la campaña global como Keren Hayesod Argentina" ("the Argentine chapter is also known as CUJA and, since 2025, has decided to adopt the name of the global campaign as Keren Hayesod Argentina").[1] It describes itself as a non-profit organisation "dedicada a fortalecer los vínculos entre la comunidad judeo-argentina y el Estado de Israel" ("dedicated to strengthening the ties between the Jewish-Argentine community and the State of Israel").[2]

The name CUJA stands for the Campaña Unida Judeo Argentina.[3] Its legal entity, the Campaña Unida Judeo Argentina de Cultura y Asistencia Asociación Civil (CUIT 30-57616993-7), has its registered seat at Marcelo T. de Alvear 1430, 8th floor, Capital Federal. In April 2026 it called an ordinary general assembly for 12 May 2026 to approve its accounts for its 49th financial year, ending 31 December 2025, and to elect its board; the notice was signed by its president, Roberto César Niebieski.[4]

History

Keren Hayesod Argentina says its work began in the years before the creation of the State of "Israel". It says that in 1921 the Argentine community received "un gran reconocimiento de Lord Rothschild y de Jaim Weitzman" ("great recognition from Lord Rothschild and Chaim Weizmann") for its rapid involvement with Keren Hayesod, and that in 1925 Albert Einstein spoke at the campaign's opening event at the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires. It adds that since the creation of the state "la inmigración a Israel se hizo posible por la acción del Keren Hayesod" ("immigration to Israel was made possible by the action of Keren Hayesod").[1]

Activities

Keren Hayesod Argentina says it supports Jewish education, both schools in the Jewish school network and informal education, "con el fin de profundizar la identidad judía en las nuevas generaciones y fortalecer su vínculo con Israel" ("in order to deepen Jewish identity in new generations and strengthen their bond with Israel"), and organises events and talks on current affairs, politics and culture. Its volunteer work is carried out through an executive committee, a women's division and young leadership groups.[2]

In a 2023 interview with Itón Gadol, Yakir Keren, deputy director of Keren Hayesod for Latin America, Spain and Portugal, said Argentine donors had funded small shelters on each floor of the Jewish Agency's housing for elderly people living within 40 kilometres of the Gaza Strip, aircraft to bring Jews from Ukraine, and the "Aliá Protegida" programme. He said the CUJA had brought an official band of the Israeli army to an event, which had led many in the Argentine community to support projects "para el bienestar del soldado israelí" ("for the welfare of the Israeli soldier"). He said diaspora Jews should not pay for weapons or tanks, but that recreation areas on army bases were "responsabilidad de todos nosotros" ("the responsibility of all of us"), and that three such projects had been adopted that year, to be inaugurated by delegations for "Israel"'s 75th anniversary.[3]

On 13 November 2023 Itón Gadol reported that the Organización Sionista Argentina had organised an event at the Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires with "Keren Hayesod CUJA", the Jewish Agency and the World Zionist Organization. More than 2,000 people attended, and money was raised through the campaign "centralizada por el Keren Hayesod CUJA" ("centralised by Keren Hayesod CUJA") for victims of terrorism. The report included Keren Hayesod's worldwide figures for its response to 7 October 2023, among them "3 ambulancias fueron donadas al Ejército de Israel (FDI)" ("3 ambulances were donated to the Israeli army (IDF)").[5]
