  • 2006 The Jewish chronicle reported in August 2006: 'MORE THAN 600 members of the Glasgow Jewish community turned out to show solidarity for Israel on Sunday at a meeting at Giffnock and Newlands Synagogue. Dr Kenneth Collins, president of the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, welcomed the supporters, who, he said, “stood together as a community in support of Israel.” The meeting was chaired by Kenneth Davidson, chairman of Glasgow Zionist Federation. During the meeting there was a live link with Avi Krampa, mayor of the Ma’ale Yoseph region in the north of Israel. The mayor described the current conditions in the area, and also expressed his gratitude for support from the Jewish community in Britain. Ken Macintosh, MSP for Glasgow Eastwood, offered his encouragement and solidarity. He also apologised that Eastwood MP Jim Murphy was unable to attend as he was on holiday. Referring to graffiti painted on the pavement outside Glasgow’s Garnethill Synagogue, and demonstrations against the Israeli national cricket team playing in Scotland, Mr Macintosh noted his concern that “the tension in the Middle East had been reflected in antisemitic incidents in Scotland.” He added that he felt that the “terrorism of Hizbollah and Hamas against Israel is on a par with the London bombings of last July.” He said: “We have to speak up to defend tolerance in our multi-cultural society.” He also said that he believed that politics was more successful than terrorism to achieve ends. Keynote speaker, the deputy ambassador from the Israeli embassy, Zvi Ravner, said: “This warm welcome from Scotland is encouraging and heartwarming. It will go straight to the heart of those in northern Israel.” The event was organised by the Representative Council, the Glasgow ZF and JNF. An appeal for funds to send to Israel raised £1,588.[9]
