Estonia: its Jewish community, relations with "Israel" and Israeli arms purchases

There were 1,939 Jews in Estonia in 2023, according to the population register as cited by the World Jewish Congress (WJC).[1] Estonia has bought an Israeli Blue Spear coastal defence system.[2]

Jewish community

Most Estonian Jews live in Tallinn, with communities in Tartu, Narva and Kohtla-Järve. The Jewish Community of Estonia is the WJC's affiliate; the WJC says that it "takes an active role in advocating for Israel through cultural, educational, and diplomatic channels".[1]

Israeli state and commercial ties

Diplomacy

The Israeli foreign ministry's 2011 list of missions records relations with Estonia as established in January 1992, with "Israel" represented by its ambassador in Finland.[3] The WJC says that "Israel" recognised Estonia almost immediately in 1991 and is represented through its embassy in Helsinki.[1]

Arms trade

SIPRI records an Estonian order in 2021 for two Blue Spear coastal defence systems with 25 Blue Spear anti-ship missiles, delivered in 2024; 40 Spike-NLOS missiles for coastal defence; Spike anti-tank missiles, including 500 Spike-SR from a German production line; M-65 120mm mortars; and Mini Harpy loitering munitions ordered in 2023.[2]

Trade

The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics reports that "Israel" imported goods worth $88.1 million from Estonia in 2025 (2024: $92.1 million) and exported goods worth $15.2 million to it (2024: $11.5 million).[4]

Political interference

UN voting

Estonia voted in favour of the September 2025 General Assembly resolution endorsing the New York Declaration on a two-state solution.[5]
