Northern Ireland consists of the six most North Easterly counties of the Island of Ireland. It is a statelet created by the partition of Ireland in 1921. Northern Ireland was created under threat of force of arms from the military and political representatives of Ulster Unionism together with their allies in the British ruling class.
The boundaries of the state (six counties instead of the nine counties of the historic province of 'Ulster') were drawn specifically to ensure that Northern Ireland would contain a majority of Protestants in perpetuity.
