Chabad Lubavitch of Chile (Jabad Lubavitch de Chile) is the Chabad-Lubavitch organisation in Chile. It is led by Rabbi Menashe Perman, who has been in the country with his wife Chaya since 1981, and is based at Los Cactus 1575 in La Dehesa, Santiago.[1][2] A second centre, Chabad Pucón, opened in 2008 in the southern lake town of Pucón to serve Israeli and other tourists.[3]
History
According to Chabad's world headquarters, the Permans have been in Chile since 1981.[1] After the 8.8-magnitude earthquake of February 2010, Chabad of Santiago delivered rice and other food staples to areas south of the capital, with rabbis, community members and students taking part; Perman said that the authorities were concentrating on Concepción, so Chabad was turning to outlying areas.[1]
In December 2008 the Hebrew Chabad news site COL reported that, after many years of work with Israelis under Rabbi Menashe Perman, Chabad of Chile was opening a Chabad house in Pucón for Israelis and other tourists, dedicated to the memory of Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, the Chabad emissaries killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. It was to be run by Rabbi Elimelech and Goldi Perman, and to be fully operating by Hanukkah.[3]

Registered entities
The Chilean civil registry's open-data extract of non-profit legal persons (personas jurídicas sin fines de lucro) published on datos.gob.cl contains no entity with "Jabad", "Chabad" or "Lubavitch" in its name, but the downloadable file covers only a monthly extract; the full register is published only as an interactive dashboard and was not searched. The organisation's own website refused access. Its legal form and registration number have therefore not been established.[4]

Controversies
Torres del Paine fire case (2012)
In January 2012 a Chilean appeals court relaxed the travel restrictions on Rotem Singer, a young Israeli backpacker accused of starting the December 2011 fire in Torres del Paine National Park, lifting a ban on his leaving Patagonia. The Argentine Jewish news agency Itón Gadol reported that Perman, as Chabad's emissary in Chile, had undertaken to help Singer find accommodation in Santiago.[5] In February 2012 the Puerto Natales court approved a conditional suspension of the proceedings: Singer paid US$10,000 to the national forestry agency CONAF and agreed to coordinate, as a volunteer with the Keren Kayemet LeIsrael, a campaign to raise at least 50,000 native plants for reforesting the park.[6]
Politics and Israel links
Chabad Pucón was set up specifically to serve the Israeli travellers who pass through southern Chile.[3]
