Not to be confused with the similarly spelled Wolfson family
The Woolfson family in Scotland has been a major player in the Caledonian Cousinhood of Zionism for more than 100 years at least until the early 2000s.
Many key names in the Caledonian Cousinhood including from the Goldberg family, Wolfson family, Woolfson family, Levinson family/Livingston family, Golombok family, Furst family, Sragowitz family, Gerber family and many others; from the Jewish Echo, 11 January 1929.[1]
A family written overview:
- There were three Wolfzon brothers and a sister who arrived to start a new life in Scotland between the years 1886 to 1891. They later called themselves Woolfson. They were all born in Zagare, in Lithuania which at that time was in Russia. Zagare is located in north of Lithuania close to the border with Latvia. Here are some details about them:-
- Jacob Woolfson arrived in Glasgow 1886. He was aged 17 on arrival and was single. He worked as a Tailor’s Machinist. He married Annie Boob and had eight children.
- Louis (who spelled his name Wolifson) arrived in Glasgow three years later in 1889. He was aged 29 and was single. He worked as a Master Tailor. He married Jeanie Glen and had two sons. Jeanie died shortly after giving birth to their second son who also did not survive. He then married Fannie Sklair and had a further five children.
- Moses Woolfson together with his wife and his six children arrived in Glasgow in 1891. He was aged 44 on arrival and was married to Pesha Leah (Bessie) Tankel aged 38. Moses was a dealer in Drapery and Jewellery. Their six children who accompanied them in 1891 were:-
- Yetta aged 16, Tella aged 14, Philip aged 12, Barnet aged 10, William aged 8, and Nathan aged 1. Joseph, their youngest son, was born in Glasgow in 1892.
- Nessie Woolfson[2] aged about 26, also arrived in Glasgow around this time. Did she arrive together with her husband Harris Bloch[3] or were they married in Glasgow? Harris worked as a Spirit Merchant. We would like to learn more about Nessie.
- Another sister, Yakhkha Freda Wolfzon who was born in 1856 in Zagare, married Shmuel Montoriski and stayed in Lithuania. They had five children who later emigrated from Lithuania. Here are some details about them:-
- Hanetta Montoriski, aged about 23, arrived in Pontypridd in Wales in about 1900. She married Jacob Cogan. We believe they had a son. We would like to gain more information about her.
- Isack Montoriski changed his name to Morris. He arrived in Wales in about 1900 aged 19. He then moved to Cape Colony in South Africa then to Australia in 1904. He became a revered rabbi. He married Rosie Falk and had five children. Rosie died young and he remarried Rachel Grinblatt and had a further two children.
- Israel Montoriski changed his name to Morrison. He arrived in Glasgow in about 1900 aged 15. He was described as a labourer, a tailor presser and an iron driller. He married Leah Hodge and had six children.
- John Joseph Montoriski changed his name to Morrison. He arrived in London aged 13. He married Annie Weitzman (later White) and had six children. He was a fishmonger.
- Fanny Montoriski, the youngest child was born in Skoudas in Lithuania in 1893. She arrived in Pontypridd in Wales and then moved to Glasgow. In 1916 she moved to New York to join her husband Lazarus Lomonsow. They had two 2 children.[4]
A further family account with additional detail:
- We have documentation that shows that my family lived in Zagare for about 100 years from about 1785 until about 1890, when they left Zagare for Glasgow. Almost certainly they lived in Zagare for about 400 years (from about 1500) but no specific records exist to prove this. My three times great grandfather was called Wolf, which is probably why my surname is Wolfzon (Woolfson) because in about 1804 the Russian authorities required all citizens to have a surname, which they had not previously had. We know that Wolf had two sons, Leyb Fayvush Wolfzon, born in 1803 and Israel Wolfzon who was born 17 years later in about 1820. They were both born in Zagare. Almost certainly there were more siblings than the two brothers but we have been unable to trace these. Leyb Fayvush married Chaya Leah Wolfzon and they had a son in 1839 called Shaia Wolfzon, also born in Zagare. Israel, my great-great grandfather married Etta Wolfzon (nee Jakobson). He was a watchmaker. They had 5 children that we know of. Their names and birth dates were:
- Moses Woolfson 1847, 18 August
- Yakkha Freyde 1856
- Louis Wolifson 1860, 23 May
- Nessie Woolfson 1865 - 1948[5]
- Jacob Woolfson 1869
- Apart from Yakkha, the 3 brothers and one sister left Zagare and settled in Glasgow between 1885 & 1890. Moses was the last of his siblings to leave in 1890. Yakkha married Shmuel Montoriski, who was a dyer in Zagare. The family later moved from Zagare to Skuodas. Their 5 children later emigrated to the UK, USA and Australia. Service in the Russian army of 25 years became compulsory and this was the main reason why my family left. They always referred to Zagare as their home, Der Heim, in an affectionate way.
- Jacob, the youngest child, was the first to migrate to Glasgow, followed by Louis and Nessie. Moses, my great grandfather, was the last to migrate to Glasgow with his wife and his six children.
- Moses married Pesha Leah Woolfson (nee Tankel) in Zagare on 21 October 1872. 6 of their 7 children were born in Zagare (the 7th was born in Glasgow in 1892). Israel Philip Woolfson was my grandfather. The names and birth details and age on arrival in Glasgow were:
- Sarah Etta 1 August 1875 15 years
- Tilla 18 January 1877 13 years
- Israel Philip 15 January 1879 11 years
- Barnie 25 December 1881 9 years
- Willie 20 August 1883 7 years
- Nathan 15 June 1890 3 months
- For Moses and Pesha Lea, it must have been a difficult decision to leave Zagare for Glasgow with their small children (the youngest, Nathan, was 3 months old) although it was clearly helpful to have his two brothers and his sister already settled in Glasgow. The three brothers started off their new life in Scotland working as tailors. Moses and Jacob were highly religious and Judaism played an important part of their lives. Not listed here are the most prominent of our relatives, namely three sisters, daughters of Leyb Jakobson, called Etta, Leah and Sarah. This brought together the Wolfzon, Gerber, and Tankel and Sussman families originating from Zagare, Siaulenai and Riga.[6]
