Obituary

  • 1929 - THE LATE M. WOOLFSON Tribute by Rev. D. Jacobs. The death of Mr. M. Woolfson has created a wide gap in the congregation of the South Portland Street Synagogue, and has bereft Glasgow Jewry of one of its most prominent and respected members. Mr. Woolfson was a Jew of a type which is gradually waning, and difficult to find. He was not only a staunch advocate of traditional Judaism, but his piety was translated into actions of charity and benevolence. He was a true lover and a friend of Rabbis and scholars. Whenever one of these needed help, Mr. Woolfson was the first to champion his cause, and not only did he himself give liberally, but by his charming personality and by the gift of wit and humour at his command made others give also. It was a real delight for the writer of this article, who accompanied him frequently on these missions, to see in what high esteem and respect he was held, and how cheerfully and generously everyone responded to the call of this grand old man. But a good many of Mr. Woolfson’s charitable acts were concealed from the public eye; many were the poor and needy upon whom he lavished his generosity in private. His death is indeed an irreparable loss to Glasgow Jewry. The heart of the community goes out in sympathy and condolence to the heartbroken sons and daughters, grandchildren, and to the whole family, who deeply mourn his loss. May his dear soul rest in peace.[3]
