Keren Peulos is a religious corporation at 816 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Between 2006 and 2018 it received grants of $1,806,782 from the Laber Foundation and the Korf Family Foundation, making it one of the largest recipients of either.[1][2] Little else about it is public.
Registration and property
The IRS Business Master File lists Keren Peulos under EIN 11-3141647 at 816 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, care of Tzvi Polter, with a ruling date of January 1994 and church filing status, so it files no Form 990.[3] New York City records show an $800,000 mortgage from Fifth Third Bank on 816 Eastern Parkway, dated February 2008,[4] and its satisfaction in 2015. In the 2015 document the corporation is described as "Keren Peulos, a New York State religious corp.".[5]
Observation: 816 Eastern Parkway is also the address of the Shluchim Office, the support office for Chabad emissaries.[6] No public source has been found that sets out any connection between the two bodies.
The Forward (critical) listed Keren Peulos among large recipients that did not answer its questions and that "do not appear to have any direct ties to Korf's family".[7]
Editor's note: the evidence about Keren Peulos's activities is thin. It files no return, has no website that has been found, and its purpose is not stated in any public record seen. Further sources are welcome.
Funding from the Korf and Laber foundations
Status: allegation. In 2020 the US Department of Justice filed civil forfeiture complaints alleging that Ihor Kolomoisky and Gennadiy Bogolyubov defrauded PrivatBank in Ukraine, and that their associates Mordechai Korf and Uriel Laber "created a web of entities, usually under some variation of the name 'Optima,' to further launder the misappropriated funds".[8] Korf and Laber are claimants in those cases, not defendants. They deny any wrongdoing, and no criminal charge against either man has been found. The Forward reported in 2020 that "there is no evidence that any of the recipients were aware of the two men's connection to the laundering".[7] This page has found no authority that accuses Keren Peulos of wrongdoing, and no source that traces any of the alleged proceeds to it. The grants below are lawful grants as the Korf Family Foundation and the Laber Foundation reported them to the Internal Revenue Service. They are not evidence of tracing. The full account is on Chabad and Ukraine.
Every grant to Keren Peulos listed on the 990-PF returns of the two foundations is set out below, year by year. Tax years end on 30 November. The figures for the tax year ending November 2006 are those on the amended returns, which the foundation pages cite; the original returns gave slightly different amounts.[9][10] Some years file the payee as "Keren Paulos".
