Unionist domination came under increasing challenge in the late 1960s with the emergence of the civil rights movement. By 1969, the situation had erupted into a violent conflict, the Troubles, which would go on to cost more than 3,700 lives and would not wind down until the emergence of the peace process in the 1990s.

Propaganda, disinformation and various forms of covert political action were practised by all sides during the conflict. In the aftermath of the Troubles, truth recovery regarding the roles of the major actors remains a key issue with particular controversy surrounding allegations of state collusion with both loyalist and republican paramilitaries.

Following the end of the conflict, the creation of the [[Northern Ireland Assembly]] has paved the way for more mundane forms of political spin, such as the emergence of a Northern Ireland lobbying industry.

Welcome to Powerbase - your guide to networks of power, lobbying and deceptive PR.

Members of the top secret British Army Force Research Unit in the 1980s. Ian Hurst is pictured second from left. Philip Campbell Smith is second from the right. Smith was convicted of blagging information as a private detective in 2012, and accused by the BBC's Panorama of bugging Hurst's computer.

The State Violence and Collusion Project has been set up by Spinwatch in collaboration with the Pat Finucane Centre. It acts as a platform for research on state violence and collusion in the Northern Ireland conflict. By building up a comprehensive picture of the role of state structures in the conflict, we aim to assist families and researchers in working on particular cases, and in making the case for a wider public process of truth recovery.

Powerbase has a policy of strict referencing and is overseen by a managing editor, a Sysop and several associate portal editors. The editor of the State Violence and Collusion Project is Tom Griffin.

Can you help?

Powerbase can be made more effective if more people join the project. If you have research or writing skills or just spare time, you can help.

If you are unsure where to start, you could expand some of the recently created but currently very brief articles. (If you look at the recent changes page you will see some noted as being 'stubs' - articles that may just be a line or two and needing to be fleshed out). So if you would like to add to some of those you would be most welcome.

There is an automatically updated page which includes the pages which have been signalled by Powerbase users as most wanted. In addition there is a page which includes a list of Things you can do to help.

Or if you would like some other suggestions closer to your interests you could drop Powerbase editor, David Miller an email. His address is editor AT powerbase.info
