Chabad-Lubavitch in Iraq has no resident emissary, Chabad house or registered local body. No Iraqi centre appears in the movement's own directory.[1] The documented activity is support for Jewish members of the US forces during the occupation, through the Chabad-affiliated Aleph Institute and a Chabad chaplain, and a one-off printing of the Tanya in 2023.
Visits and one-off activity
There is no resident emissary or centre.
- 2003. The Chabad rabbi Jacob Goldstein, a National Guard chaplain, took Torah scrolls and prayer books to Jewish soldiers in Iraq and the region.[2]
- 2008. The Aleph Institute sent Passover supplies to Jewish US troops in Iraq. They were flown into Baghdad's Green Zone by military helicopter for seders "at army bases across Iraq".[3]
- May 2023. Two Lubavitch men, Yanky Rubin and Mendy Lieberman, printed copies of the Tanya in Baghdad and then in Kuwait City.[4]
Relations with the state and the US military
The 2003 and 2008 activity took place within the US military presence during the occupation.[2][3] No contact between Chabad and the Iraqi state was found.
