Chabad-Lubavitch in Gabon has no resident emissary or Chabad house. The country is served by visits from Chabad-Lubavitch of Central Africa, based in Kinshasa, which lists "Punctual visits to Libreville" with synagogue services, holiday and summer programmes and an online Hebrew school.[1] The same listing marks the countries with resident emissaries as "permanent representation"; Gabon is not one of them.[1]
Visits
There is no resident emissary or centre. All of the following are Chabad-side accounts.
- Chanukah 2002. Lubavitch.com reported that Chabad of Central Africa sent rabbinical students to ten African countries. Gabon's Jewish community, which the article put at "close to 1000", wrote to thank Chabad "for bringing Rabbis Mendel Goldberg and Mendy Narboni to celebrate Chanukah with them".[2]
- Chanukah 2011. Students from the new rabbinical school in Kinshasa travelled to Gabon, among other countries, and "hosted public menorah lightings and holiday events".[3]
- Passover 2013. Chabad of Central Africa said a community seder in Gabon would be "hosted by local communities", not by its own students.[4] In 2012 and 2015 Gabon was listed only among the countries whose residents could contact the Kinshasa office for matzah or to join a programme elsewhere.[4][5]
- Passover 2018. Chabad.org listed Gabon among the places where Chabad of Central Africa's rabbinical students would hold seders.[6]
Funding and controversies
None found.
- Editor's note: The 2018 item is an announcement; no report that the seder took place was found.
