Chabad-Lubavitch in Myanmar was founded in Yangon in late 2018 by Rabbi Schneur Raitport (also Shneur) and Yehudis Raitport (also Yehudit). They were appointed by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor of Chabad Lubavitch of Thailand.[1] By late 2019 they ran a synagogue, classes, holiday programmes and what the Jerusalem Post called Myanmar's first kosher restaurant, in a villa in central Yangon.[1][2]
- Editor's note: the house's current status is unverified. Its website could not be read in text form in October 2026, and Myanmar does not appear in the Lubavitch.com Asia directory index.
Emissaries and centre
- Schneur Raitport, born in Caracas to Chabad emissaries, is a shochet and mohel. He has been called on to perform circumcisions in South Korea and Vietnam.[1]
- The Raitports estimated the local Jewish community at about 100. They also served business travellers, Israeli backpackers and aid workers.[1]
Relations with the state, business and Israel
- Israeli embassy. Before moving, the Raitports met the incoming Israeli ambassador to Myanmar, Ronen Gilor. JNS reports that Raitport's father had circumcised the ambassador's son in Caracas.[1]
- Israeli volunteers. The house catered two weeks of kosher meals for a group of Israeli backpackers volunteering at a school outside Yangon.[1]
- Editor's note: no source was found on how the house was affected by the February 2021 military coup or on dealings with the junta.
