History and Development
First: Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh, opened in 1954 under Chaim Yaakov Goldvicht; its hesder ("arrangement") was modelled on Nahal, whose units split their time between kibbutz and army service.[1] (A 2025 essay by Mayer Lichtenstein dates "the founding of the Hesder movement" to 1953.[5]) Four further hesder yeshivot were set up in the year after the 1967 war.[1] Yeshivat Har Etzion was founded after 1967 and was headed by Yehuda Amital and later also Aharon Lichtenstein.[5] Expanded with the settlement movement from the 1970s. Awarded the Israel Prize in 1991 (received by Goldvicht on behalf of the hesder yeshivot).[1] Now 77 yeshivot recognised by the Ministry of Defence,[2] with over 10,000 students.[3][4]

Function
Intensive Torah study plus shortened IDF service (~17 months, often combat). The Ministry of Defence describes four hesder tracks; in the classic 44-month track, students have up to 12 months' early unpaid leave for study, 17 months of active service and a final 15 months of study.[2] Includes semicha, teacher training, community service. Some have overseas programs.[11] Kerem B'Yavneh says hesder students "usually serve in the most critical areas, such as paratroops or one of the elite infantry brigades".[1] An Israel Democracy Institute researcher put the hesder students' rate of enlistment in combat units at "approximately 80%".[12]
Controversies
Criticism over shorter service versus standard 32 months, accused by some of unequal burden or draft dodging despite combat roles.[12] Internal debates on Torah versus service balance.[5]
Refusal of evacuation orders: Elon Moreh and Har Bracha (2009–2013)
In November 2009 the head of the IDF Personnel Directorate, Maj.-Gen. Avi Zamir, told the hesder yeshivot to condemn insubordination or lose their arrangements, naming Elon Moreh (Rabbi Eliakim Levanon) and Har Bracha (Rabbi Eliezer Melamed) over support for soldiers refusing orders to evacuate settlements.[13][14] In December 2009 Defence Minister Ehud Barak removed Har Bracha from the hesder arrangement after Melamed refused to retract calls on soldiers to refuse evacuation orders; Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed the decision.[9][15][16][17] In July 2013 Defence Minister Moshe Ya'alon reinstated Har Bracha, and at the same time admitted Givat Olga and the Ofakim yeshiva's branch in Modi'in to the hesder programme.[10][18][19]
Attack on Otniel (2002)
On 27 December 2002 Palestinian gunmen attacked Yeshivat Otniel in the Otniel settlement in the South Hebron Hills, killing four students; Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.[8][20]
UK charities and settlements
In August 2026 the Charity Commission opened a statutory class inquiry into charities working in illegal Israeli settlements; the charities were not named.[21] In September 2026 Declassified UK named The Friends Of The Yeshivat Har Etzion Trust among six UK charities that "appear to funnel donations to Israeli settlements", noting that the trust's grant recipients are not named in its reports.[22]
Numbers and Locations
The Ministry of Defence gives 77 hesder yeshivot;[2] the Igud Yeshivot HaHesder says it represents 64,[3] and its 2026 list gives addresses for 65 institutions.[23] Many are in pre-1967 Israel ("Israel 48") (e.g. Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh, Hesder Yeshiva of Sderot, Yeshivat Sha'alvim, Yeshivat HaHesder Yerucham). Of the 65 institutions on the Igud's 2026 list, 23 are in territory occupied in 1967: 20 in West Bank settlements and outposts (e.g. Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion, Yeshivat Otniel, Yeshivat Shilo, Yeshivat Har Bracha, Yeshivat Birkat Moshe in Ma'ale Adumim), two in East Jerusalem (Yeshivat HaKotel and Yeshivat Orayta, both in the Old City) and one in the Golan Heights (Yeshivat HaGolan, Hispin).[23][24][25][26]
Funding
Israeli government support via hesder program. External: friends-of charities abroad (see the table below), including UK Friends of Yeshivat Hesder Sderot (charity 1176787)[27] and US friends groups for many yeshivot; donations via UK Toremet Ltd for some (e.g. Netiv Tefachot, £33,160 in 2022/23[28]). The Ramat Gan yeshiva fundraises through JGive.[6]
UK charity funding by yeshiva
This table lists funding of hesder yeshivot by UK charities, grouped by yeshiva, from charity accounts and the Charity Commission register (public data extract dated 14 October 2026). "Friends-of" charities were set up to support a particular yeshiva; where their accounts or register entries do not itemise grants, the figure given is the charity's "total expenditure" for the year, which is not necessarily all paid to the yeshiva. "Grant" rows are grants named in a grant-maker's accounts. "Occupied" marks yeshivot in territory occupied by Israel in 1967.[24] A dash (–) means no amount is available.

Variants (not standard Igud hesder): Har Hamor (Jerusalem; Hardal / modified service; US: American Friends of Yeshivat Har Hamor, EIN 32-0150990[77]); Mercaz HaRav (Jerusalem; mainly gevoha, some army track).[5]
Clarifications from original Powerbase table:
- Or Etzion is in Merkaz Shapira (Israel 48), not the West Bank.[23]
- Aish HaTorah is not a standard hesder yeshiva.
- Har Hamor and Mercaz HaRav are mainly yeshiva gevoha.
- Shavei Hevron is typically gevoha, not core Igud hesder. Beit El has an Igud-listed shiluvim hesder track.[73]
- Yeshivat HaKotel, Yeshivat Netiv Aryeh and Yeshivat Orayta are in the Old City of Jerusalem, which is in occupied East Jerusalem, not Israel 48.[24]
- Yeshivat HaGolan is at Hispin, not Avnei Eitan.[23]
- Yeshivat Beit Orot (Mount of Olives) is not on the Igud's 2026 list.[23]
