Benjamin Netanyahu (born 21 October 1949) is Prime Minister of Israel and chairman of the Likud Party. He became Prime Minister for the second time in 2009.[1] In 2025 he said he felt "very much" connected to the vision of Greater Israel, and since 2026 he has said that Israeli forces will stay in a security zone in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed.

On terrorism

Netanyahu has been credited by former Secretary of State George Shultz for his central role in effecting a change in American policies on terrorism. [2] In 1979 Netanyahu initiated and organized an international conference against terrorism, under the auspices of the Jonathan Institute — a private foundation dedicated to the study of terrorism, which was named after his brother Jonathan. A second conference was organised in 1984. Through these conferences the institute espoused its doctrine of "preemptive retaliation" the Israeli policy of killing those designated as terrorists before they can act. George Shultz pushed this line at the conference and earlier in appearances before the Denton committee. The 1984 conference also produced a widely reviewed book edited by Netanyahu, Terrorism: How the West Can Win, and established Netanyahu as a leading international voice in the war against terrorism. [3]

Greater Israel

On 12 August 2025 an i24 interviewer, Sharon Gal, gave Netanyahu an amulet showing "a map of the Promised Land" and asked whether he felt connected to that vision. Netanyahu answered "Very much". When Gal said "It is Greater Israel", Netanyahu replied "If you ask me, we are here" and spoke of his generation's mission. The Times of Israel reported that the exchange was cut from i24's YouTube versions.[1] Middle East Eye reported that the vision includes "occupied Palestinian territory as well as parts of Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon".[4] See Greater Israel.

Lebanon

In March 2026 his defence minister, Yisrael Katz, said that "Israel" would hold southern Lebanon up to the Litani River.[5] Visiting troops in the security zone on 30 June 2026, Netanyahu said: "As long as Hezbollah is here, armed, threatening us, we will remain." He called the security zones "a paradigm shift" and said: "We are doing this in Lebanon, [just as] we did it in Gaza."[6] In October 2026 he told Radio North: "No, I don't trust them to disarm Hezbollah. That's why we said that, as long as it remains armed, we will stay in this zone."[7] See Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon (2024–present).
