The Jewish News Limited (03302610) publishes the weekly Jewish News and jewishnews.co.uk. It was incorporated on 15 January 1997 as London Jewish News Limited and took its present name on 21 October 2004. The registered office is New Burlington House, 1075 Finchley Road, London NW11 0PU, the same address as its owner, The Jacob Foundation. Nature of business: publishing of newspapers (SIC 58130). Status: active.[1][2]

The paper

The paper dates its founding to 1997. The first director was Gary Louis Stern (appointed 15 January 1997, resigned 4 May 2001). Michael Jeffrey Sinclair was a director from 25 April 2000 to 28 November 2000. The site describes a free weekly, “twice crowned free newspaper of the year,” with a digital list it puts at more than 300,000. Editor Richard Ferrer and news editor Justin Cohen are directors and are described by the paper as co-publishers.[3][2]

In February 2020 the paper and The Jewish Chronicle announced a merger, subject to finance. In April 2020 both were put into a liquidation process ahead of a combined rescue. A consortium led by Robbie Gibb bought the Chronicle from its liquidators. Jewish News then said it had funds to continue alone.[4][2]

Ownership

Until 11 November 2020 the person with significant control was Jn News and Media Group, notified 6 April 2016, 75 per cent or more of the shares and votes, correspondence address 5 Wigmore Street, London W1U 1PB. That is a Noé Group address. Noe Group (Corporate Services) Limited ceased as a director the same day.[5][6]

On 11 November 2020 David Joseph Bloom, Alex Brummer, Justin Cohen, Richard Ferrer and Adam Richard Cannon were appointed directors. Bloom, a Goldacre Ventures and Noé partner, resigned on 30 September 2021. Cannon resigned on 17 November 2025.[3][7]

The Jacob Foundation (company 01864076; charity 290759) was notified as person with significant control on 24 November 2020: 75 per cent or more of the shares and of the voting rights. Its own trustees’ report says it owns the entire issued share capital and that the paper “inherited this structure in 2020.” The foundation was established in October 1984. A correspondence address used on the company PSC form is Bunkers Dip, Neville Drive, London N2 0QR. The operating address on the charity accounts is New Burlington House. The paper’s site says the foundation’s objects are cohesion inside the Jewish community, cohesion with other communities, and support for Jewish charities, and that the foundation has lent money to keep the paper going.[5][8][2]

In February 2025 the paper reported that the foundation had appointed Mike Freer, John Mann and Graham Goodkind as trustees, and named Robert Peston as its first “ambassador.”[9]

Worked for 23s The Jacob Foundation is the old Kessler vehicle under a new name. It sold the Chronicle in 2020 and now owns Jewish News outright.

The Jacob Foundation

Type Charitable company limited by guarantee
Registration ID 290759
Headquarters New Burlington House, 1075 Finchley Road, London NW11 0PU

The Jacob Foundation (charity 290759; company 01864076) is a London charitable company. It was registered on 7 December 1984 as The Kessler Foundation and changed its name in the autumn of 2020. It owns the entire share capital of The Jewish News Limited (03302610). It no longer owns The Jewish Chronicle.[1][2][3]

Objects and activity

The objects on the register are general charitable purposes under the law of England and Wales, and to promote and support foundations, institutions, trusts and undertakings “established anywhere in the world exclusively for charitable purposes.” The register says it makes grants to organisations and operates throughout England and in Israel. It is not recognised by HMRC for Gift Aid. Auditor: Cohen Arnold, New Burlington House. Contact email on the register: rob@oldschoolconsultants.com.[1]

The 2024 trustees’ report says the foundation was set up in 1984, then as The Kessler Foundation, “with the primary role of taking over ownership of the Jewish Chronicle newspaper from its prior owners, the Kessler family,” so that ownership would be transparent and independent of external influence. The same report says Jewish News “inherited this structure in 2020,” and that loans to The Jewish News Limited are treated as within the objects. The paper’s own site says the change of ownership was completed in October 2020 and that the name changed from Kessler to Jacob at about the same time, ending the near-40-year link with the Chronicle and the Kessler family.[2][4]

The predecessor page on this site lists the Chronicle companies the foundation then controlled: Jewish Chronicle Newspaper Limited (00961929), Jewish Chronicle Limited (00095587) and Jewish Chronicle Trust Limited (00966860).[3] In April 2020 the Chronicle was sold out of liquidation to a consortium led by Robbie Gibb. Alan Jacobs, then chairman, wrote that donations which had kept the paper going would be repaid to the foundation.[5]

People

The Charity Commission lists eight trustees. The 2024 accounts list John Mann as appointed on 7 February 2025 and resigned on 31 October 2025. The public register had not caught up when read for this page. No trustee is recorded as receiving remuneration.[1][2]

David Francis Kessler (June 1906), the Chronicle proprietor, was a director until 31 December 1991. Later Kessler directors include Charles Kessler (16 October 2018 to 5 November 2020) and Michael Simon Kessler (1 October 2014 to 1 October 2016). Stephen Ian Pollard, then editor of the Chronicle, was a director from 24 November 2008 to 30 September 2013. Steven Michael Noé was appointed on 5 November 2020, the day Charles Kessler left, and resigned on 31 May 2023. That is the handover from the Kessler board to the board that took Jewish News.[6][7]

In February 2025 the paper named Robert Peston as the foundation’s first “ambassador,” alongside the Freer, Mann and Goodkind appointments.[8]

1 source Have a look at the stub and other material below on Tel Hai and produce an expanded updated wiki profile: Tel Hai Fund Ltd., provides funds to both the Yeshivat Hesder Shiloh in the settlement of Shilo and the Keshet Yehuda, a pre-military yeshiva based in the occupied Golan Heights. It also donates funds to the Maarat Hamachpela Heritage Fund. The Maarat Hamachpela is better known as the Cave of the Patriarchs, located in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron — the scene of the Baruch Goldstein massacre. One of its directors is Eric Graus, the life president of the Likud Herut UK, which is politically aligned with the governing Israeli Likud Party. The webpage of the organisation details its support for settlement activity, Israeli annexation of east Jerusalem and opposition to the principle of dismantling settlements. In the 1970s, Graus was instrumental in the revival of Betar UK, the UK affiliate of Betar, a revisionist Zionist youth movement, closely linked to the Irgun organisation. The latter was a Zionist terrorist organisation that infamously blew up the King David Hotel in 1946 (at that time the British administrative headquarters for Palestine), killing 91 people. Graus has also served as the honorary secretary of the Zionist Federation. He later became British National Council Zionist Co-Chair. Graus is the owner of Graus Antiques dealers. He is also the chairperson of the Menachem Begin Heritage Foundation. Begin was a former leader of the Irgun who later became Israel’s prime minister and the first leader of the Likud to assume that office. In 1982, Graus rejected the possibility of Israeli responsibility for the 1982 massacre of Palestinians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Lebanon. ----

Tel Hai Fund Limited (charity 266913; company 01151421) is a London grant-maker for education, religion and physical education in Israel. It was incorporated on 14 December 1973 and registered on 11 February 1974. The name is the Revisionist memorial at Tel Hai, the 1920 battle in which Joseph Trumpeldor was killed and which Betar took as a slogan. For most of its life the board ran through Eric Graus and Graus Antiques.[1][2]

Objects

The register objects are to advance education and religion among adults and young persons, and to advance physical education among young persons, in the State of Israel. The charity makes grants to individuals, organisations and other charities. The register lists children and young people, elderly people, people with disabilities, and people of a particular ethnic or racial origin. Area of operation: London and Israel. Contact address on the register: 7 Murray Crescent, Pinner HA5 3QF. Current directors file their correspondence care of Graus Antiques, Mill Street, London W1S 2AT.[1][2]

Eric Graus

Eric Graus (April 1927) was a director from before 30 June 1991 until 12 March 2018. He died aged 90. The address on his resignation filing was 4 Melvin Hall, Golders Green Road, London NW11 9QB.[2]

Geoffrey Alderman’s obituary in The Jewish Chronicle says Graus was born in Bratislava in 1927, that the family fled to England in 1939, and that he was active in Ze'ev Jabotinsky’s Revisionist movement. In 1947 he was a member of Lehi in Mandate Palestine and formed friendships with Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir. He later dealt in antiques from New Bond Street. In 1970 he established the British Herut movement. In 1972 he brought Begin to London for a first visit. In 1977, after Begin’s election, he relaunched Likud-Herut as a British pressure group for the new government. He was awarded the State of Israel Fighters Medal. Alderman writes that he was also active in the Soviet Jewry campaign, and that he worked to rehabilitate Begin against British Jews who called Begin a terrorist.[3]

The existing page on this fund adds that Graus was life president of Likud Herut UK, honorary secretary of the Zionist Federation, and later British National Council Zionist co-chair; that he revived Betar UK in the 1970s; that he chaired the Menachem Begin Heritage Foundation; and that in 1982 he rejected Israeli responsibility for the massacre at Sabra and Shatila. Those points are not in the Alderman obituary.[4]

His son Jeremy Graus (July 1959), nationality filed as Israeli, country of residence Israel, has been a director since 3 September 2018 and a trustee since 20 September 2022.[2][1]

Activities and Grants

Raises funds for education and religious purposes in Israel. Makes grants to individuals, organisations and other charities supporting children/young people, elderly people, people with disabilities and people of particular ethnic or racial origin. Operates in London and Israel. Known grants include support for Yeshivat Hesder Shilo (a Hesder Yeshiva in Shilo settlement) and Keshet Yehuda.[5]

Where the money goes

The grant series below is the fuller of the two accounts compilations supplied for this page. An earlier draft in the same note does not match it cell for cell. Empty cells are nil in that compilation. Totals are the row totals supplied, except Hesder Yeshivah Shiloh, whose total cell was blank and is the sum of the cells in that row.

The politically marked recipients are the Hesder yeshiva at Shilo, the pre-military academy at Keshet on the occupied Golan, the Cave of the Patriarchs fund in Hebron, Ofra, Karnei Shomron, Gush Etzion, Betar, and the Begin institutions.

Yeshivat Hesder Shiloh sits in the settlement of Shilo. A Hesder programme combines yeshiva study with service in the Israel Defense Forces. The supplied row runs from 2009 and sums to £224,883. Keshet Yehuda is a pre-military academy (mechina) at Keshet in the Golan, occupied by Israel in 1967. The row sums to £40,287. Maarat Hamachpela Heritage Fund is the fund for the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, the site of the 1994 massacre by Baruch Goldstein. The row sums to £17,500. Ulpan Yeshiva High School for Girls (Ofra) received £5,000 in 2000. Yeshivat Karnei Shomron received £2,075 across 2000–07. Gush Etzion and Keren Gush Etzion received £7,776 and £10,627.[6]

Betar UK received £67,731 between 1995 and 2007. Betar Israel received £16,550. The Fund for the Development of the Zionist Idea received £55,957 in 2000–02. Begin Centre Jerusalem received £2,864 in 2004. Menachem Begin Heritage received £10,030 in 2014. This Land Is Mine received £5,200. DPC Self Defence received £8,500 in 2025. Golan Organisation received £500 in 1995.[6]

The largest rows in the same compilation are not settlement funds: Carmei Ha'ir £280,327 (2006–23), Mosdot Neveh Tzivia £204,510 (2000–25) and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Israel £115,514 (1998–2017). Zichron Menachem received £47,736 and Zaka £18,874.[6]
