The Klarman Family Foundation is a grant making foundation based in Boston. The organisation was founded by Seth A. Klarman, a "Boston-based pro-Israel billionaire."[1] The journalist Max Blumenthal describes Klarman as "one of the pro-Israel community’s most prolific financial angels and also one of its most ideologically hardline."[2]

Areas of focus

The Klarman Family Foundation describes itself as having three main areas of focus:

  • Advancing understanding of the biological basis of health and illness
  • Supporting the global Jewish community and the State of Israel
  • Expanding access to vital services and enrichment opportunities in Greater Boston[3]

Regarding Israel the foundation have stated that:

the Klarman Family Foundation maintains an unwavering commitment to demonstrating Jewish values and supporting the Jewish people and the State of Israel... We believe Israel is essential to the Jewish experience and even to Jewish survival. In an environment of growing anti-Semitism, Israel is the one Jewish state — a historic homeland where every Jew is welcome. Israel’s significance extends beyond its importance to the Jewish people. It is also a dynamic, diverse and democratic society, with an entrepreneurial spirit that has helped make it a global leader in science, technology and medicine. The Klarman Family Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life and access to opportunities for all Israeli citizens so that they may benefit from the country’s prosperity.[4]

The foundation also states that it is working with Yad Hanadiv to improve educational and career opportunities for Arab-Israelis.[4]

Unusually, the Klarman Family Foundation has funded American Islamic and Palestinian organisations, with the aim, Max Blumenthal argues, of driving "a wedge through mainstream Muslim-American organizing".[2]

The American Islamic Congress is heavily funded by the foundation; it has refused to engage with mainstream Muslim civil rights groups and forbade 'members of its student arm, Project Nur, from discussing Palestine-related issues on campus'.[2]

Counterjihad network funding

The Klarman Family Foundation has also funded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy. It is led by Zuhdi Jasser, "an Arizona-based physician and practicing Muslim who served as the key protagonist of the anti-Muslim propaganda film, The Third Jihad."[2] The foundation donated $150,000 to the AIF between 2011 and 2012.[5]

It has also funded the hardline neoconservative and Islamophobic Center for Security Policy, run by former Reagan administration defence official Frank Gaffney.

The foundation also donated $125,000 to neoconservative Daniel Pipes' think tank the Middle East Forum between 2000 and 2009.[6]
