Jon Hazel (also spelt Jonathan Hazel) is a retired colonel of the Intelligence Corps who has worked on Foreign and Commonwealth Office counter-extremism and strategic communications contracts with Albany Associates.[1] He is named, as "Jon Hazell, Col (Ret)", in a list of members of the Specialist Group Military Intelligence (SGMI) published by Anonymous in January 2019.[2]
Military career
According to the Working Group on Syria, Propaganda and Media, Hazel was mentioned in dispatches as a captain in 1993 and was a colonel in the Intelligence Corps by 2010, when he wrote a Ministry of Defence paper, The Conflict With Extreme Islamism – How To Compete In The Global Information Environment.[3]
An Albany bid for an FCO programme in Somalia describes him as "a retired full Colonel from the Intelligence Corps with significant experience of operating against extremist movements both through the acquisition and exploitation of intelligence and the use of information operations and strategic communications".[1] Another Albany bid says he "served for thirty years in the British Army", starting by "leading intelligence operations against terrorists in Northern Ireland and retiring after managing global UK cross-government C-Daesh operations that focused on strategic communications".[4]
Albany Associates
Hazel appears in several bids by Albany Associates for Conflict, Stability and Security Fund work published by Anonymous: as project manager for a Somalia programme for disengaged combatants,[1] as project director for a Mogadishu security programme,[4] and as "Research Director" and a consortium partner in pricing schedules for Syria and Libya projects.[5]
Integrity Initiative
The Institute for Statecraft expert team list includes "Jon Hazel (SC); served in MOD on the formulation of cross-government communications strategies".[6] He also appears in the "Tor Team" table under "Institution building"[7] and, as Jonathan Hazel, in the invitation list for the Institute's NGW seminars.[8]
