The next step (for some time abbreviated to tns) The next step was the review/newspaper of the Revolutionary Communist Tendency and its successor the Revolutionary Communist Party. Initially published every six weeks it became a monthly and then, in 1985, the weekly paper of what was by then the Revolutionary Communist Party. It was published by RCP publishing company Junius Publications.
It was first published in December 1979 as a six-weekly review and was wound up at number 57 in March 1985 when it became a weekly, just after the end of the 1984/85 Miners Strike.[1] According to the British Library (BL) the weekly version of the paper began publication in 1985. The first edition held by the BL is that of 26 April 1985, [2] though according to RCP sources it went weekly on 19 April.[3] The BL notes that the name was changed in 1988 removing the abbreviation from the title along with the reference to the RCP. The review continued publishing until 25 February 1994 around two years before the dissolution of the RCP in 1996.[4]
Changes in contents and size
In its launch edition in December 1979, the next step had articles on 'Smash the PTA!' (p. 1), 'Leyland: the Crunch' (p. 1), 'Fighting racism in Britain & Europe' (p 4), the 'Labour Party Conference' (p6), 'SWP Blues: whatever happened to trade union militancy' (p 8), 'Up against imperialism in africa' (p 9) and 'AUEW strike...broad left..' (p 10). By November 1984 the paper had reached 24 pages.[5] By 1987 tns was down to twelve pages, though still a weekly.[6]
