Civil-register outline of the Stamford Hill Schreiber family, with Moses Schreiber as patriarch of the Orgel, Klein and Grossbard lines

Moses Schreiber is the father named on the 1973 and 1974 marriage certificates of David Schreiber and Osias Schreiber, both of whom gave 212 Upper Clapton Road, London E.5, as their residence. The same address is the house a September 1966 FBI report said he had bought in London. Emanuel Schreiber is placed with them as the third brother in this reconstruction. Jacob Schreiber (born 1936) is not in this sibling set: he is the son of Simon Schreiber.

The tree below is assembled from those certified copies, from United States v. Schreiber, 535 F. Supp. 1359 (S.D.N.Y. 1982), and from England and Wales civil birth and marriage indexes and Companies House date-of-birth bands used on related pages. Where a mother’s maiden name is recorded, siblings are grouped under that marriage. Dates of birth given only as month/year on company filings are marked as such and are not treated as identical to GRO quarter entries.[1][2][3]

Moses Schreiber

The 1973 certificate records Moses Schreiber as father of the groom, rank or profession knitwear manufacturer, and as a witness. The 1974 certificate records him again as father of the groom, rank or profession company director. Both grooms were living at 212 Upper Clapton Road, E.5.[1][2]

The 1966 indictment and the Upper Clapton address

On 31 March 1966 Moses Schreiber was indicted in the Southern District of New York on a twelve-count indictment “charging various violations of federal law in connection with obtaining loans of the Federal Housing Administration”. At the time of the indictment he was living in London. Judge Robert L. Carter’s opinion of 12 April 1982, refusing to dismiss the indictment, is the published account of his movements.[3]

The opinion states that in July 1964 he and his family moved to London “to be near his father who was ill at the time”. They first lived at his father’s home at 48 Moresby Road, then at 30 Seymour Court, Cazenove Road. A 1965 passport application recorded that London address and a former address at 357 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. A September 1966 FBI report, quoting a confidential source of 10 August 1966, said he had arrived in England in January 1965, resided at Seymour Court, “had bought a residence at 212 Upper Clapton Road, and was teaching at Orthodox Jewish schools”.[3] That is the address both sons gave on their marriage certificates seven and eight years later.[1][2]

The same opinion states that his youngest child to that date “was born in London in December, 1964, and a birth certificate for the child was issued by the American Embassy”. The birth was therefore a consular registration of a London birth, not a birth in the United States. December 1964 is after the Companies House bands for David Schreiber (August 1952), Osias Schreiber (October 1953) and Emanuel Schreiber (May 1956), so the embassy child is a further sibling, not one of those three.[3]

Other family facts in the opinion: his wife is named Irene in the Taylor report of an FBI interview on 26 December 1963; his sister is Miriam Stern and his brother-in-law Herman Stern; at that interview his place of employment was Stanton Salvage Co., 110 Stanton Street, New York City. From 1964 to 9 February 1969 he registered annually with the Metropolitan Police as an alien resident in order to work. His United States passport, issued by the American Embassy in London on 20 January 1965, was renewed in 1965, 1970 and 1975, refused in 1980 because of the indictment, and revoked; the revocation was upheld in January 1981, after which he returned voluntarily to New York. The court held that he knew of the indictment no later than the summer of 1966 and denied the motion to dismiss.[3]

48 Moresby Road is also the residence Miriam Orgel gave in January 1973. The opinion calls that house the father’s home in 1964. The certificate does not say the Orgel household and the paternal household were the same people.[1][3]

The three brothers

David Schreiber and Osias Schreiber are sons of the same Moses Schreiber on the face of the certificates, and both gave his Upper Clapton Road house. Emanuel Schreiber is the third brother in this outline. His own marriage entry is not in this set of certificates; he is grouped here with them, and kept apart from the Simon Schreiber line.

  • David Schreiber (Companies House band August 1952). Age 20 on 7 January 1973, bachelor, knitwear manufacturer, of 212 Upper Clapton Road, E.5. Father Moses Schreiber, knitwear manufacturer.[1]
  • Osias Schreiber (Companies House band October 1953). Age 20 on 10 March 1974, bachelor, company director, of 212 Upper Clapton Road, London E.5. Father Moses Schreiber, company director.[2]
  • Emanuel Schreiber (Companies House band May 1956). Married Chana Grossbard, Stoke Newington, 1975 Q3. Not named on the two certificates above. Placed as the third son in this reconstruction. A further child of Moses Schreiber was born in London in December 1964.[3][4]

Jacob Schreiber (born 1936) is not this Jacob and is not a son of this Moses Schreiber. He is treated under the Simon Schreiber line below.

Outline tree (Orgel line)

Outline tree (Klein line)

Outline tree (Grossbard line)

No Companies House or 147 Stamford Hill filing has yet been matched to Emanuel Schreiber or Chana Grossbard. The sibling link to David Schreiber and Osias Schreiber is the reconstruction above, not a father’s name on a Grossbard certificate in this set.

Not this household: Simon Schreiber and Jacob Schreiber (born 1936)

Simon Schreiber (Shimon Simcha Schreiber-Sofer), 9 February 1912 – 21 January 2009, is a separate man. Born Antwerp; died Antwerp; buried Har HaMenuchot, Jerusalem, 27 January 2009. Parents Akiva Dov Schreiber-Sofer (1878–1942) and Sarah Chaya Preiss / Prys (1890–1942). UK addresses 26 then 6 Heathland Road, N16. Director of Ellador Limited until resignation on 29 January 2009.[19]

Proved UK descent on that Ellador set is Joel Schreiber (born 1949) × Helen Zucker (Rivka Schreiber 1971, Jacob Schreiber 1974, Rachel Benedikt, Chavi Hamburger, Yisroel Schreiber). He is not the father of David Schreiber, Emanuel Schreiber or Osias Schreiber. Those three sit under Moses Schreiber.

This 1962 marriage is a generation above the 1973 Orgel, 1974 Klein and 1975 Grossbard marriages. The groom is not the Jacob Schreiber of The Schreib Trust (Companies House band January 1974).

Officiants and witnesses

On the David–Orgel entry the witnesses are Moses Schreiber and Jacob Lipschitz. Josef Dunner is entered as the rabbi who solemnised the marriage; Rafael M. Hirsch is secretary for marriages.[1] On the Osias–Klein entry the secretary for marriages is J. Krausz.[2] Jacob Lipschitz is carried here because the name recurs later; he is not Jacob Schreiber (born 1936), not the 1974 Orgel-line Jacob Schreiber, and not a son of Moses Schreiber on these certificates. Simcha Orgel’s occupation, diamond cutter, is the occupation written in column 8.

Notes on method

  • The two certified copies are the parentage evidence for David Schreiber and Osias Schreiber. Both name Moses Schreiber and both give 212 Upper Clapton Road, the house the 1966 FBI report said he had bought.[1][2][3]
  • Emanuel Schreiber is grouped with them as the third brother. His marriage certificate is not in this set, so the father’s name is not repeated from a Grossbard entry here.
  • The opinion’s “youngest child” of December 1964 was born in London. The American Embassy issued the birth certificate. That child is additional to the three brothers.[3]
  • Jacob Schreiber (born 1936) stays on the Simon Schreiber / Rumpler stem. Jacob Lipschitz stays a witness.
  • Rifka / Rivka entries stay separate: Zucker 1971; Grossbard 1976; Orgel 1978.
