The Schreiber family is a London property family whose companies, grouped around Midos Group, hold commercial estates across England, including the Discovery Park campus in Sandwich, Kent. The patriarch of the Upper Clapton line is Moses Schreiber (born 15 February 1931, Oradea, Romania), named as father on the marriage certificates of David Schreiber and Osias Schreiber, and the defendant in a twelve-count Federal Housing Administration indictment filed in New York on 31 March 1966. Emanuel Schreiber is treated as the third brother on the shared 1986 gold-VAT prosecution and the same household. A daughter, Rahel, is on a 1960 passenger list. The published American opinion does not record a conviction.

Companies House lists 147 Stamford Hill, London N16 5LG, as the registered office of Midos Group (UK) Limited. The Guardian has described the family as a dynasty of property entrepreneurs operating from that building.

Moses Schreiber

Moses Schreiber was born on 15 February 1931 in Oradea, recorded in a 1963 FBI interview, which the 1982 court treated as accurate on the personal details, as Oredea Uhare, Romania. The same report gives his religion as Orthodox Jew and his wife as Irene. A Board of Trade incoming-passenger list for the RMS Queen Elizabeth, New York to Southampton, arrival 4 April 1960, repeats the birth date, gives occupation as real estate, nationality and last residence as the United States, and an address in Britain of 45 Moresby, London. The visit is marked as one month. On the same list are Irene, born 2 May 1931, housewife, and Rahel, born 19 June 1951, child. The National Archives reference is BT 26/1450/49, item 49, line 5.

He is not the later Companies House directors of the same name appointed in 1986 and 1988.

The 1966 indictment

United States v. Moses Schreiber, 66 Cr. 326 (S.D.N.Y.), 535 F. Supp. 1359 (12 April 1982, Carter J.), is the published opinion. A twelve-count indictment was filed on 31 March 1966 for Federal Housing Administration loans obtained with Morris Weiss. A motion to dismiss for delay was denied. The court held that he knew of the indictment by the summer of 1966 and stayed in London. Identifying facts in the opinion:

• Born 15 February 1931, Oradea. Wife Irene. Sister Miriam Stern. Brother-in-law Herman Stern, 939 44th Street, Brooklyn, business at 1076 38th Street.
• Brooklyn addresses: 537 and 357 Bedford Avenue; Stanton Salvage Co., 110 Stanton Street; lawyer Joseph Yanklewitz, 983 Broadway.
• London from July 1964, the stated reason an ill father: 48 Moresby Road, then 30 Seymour Court, Cazenove Road; he bought 212 Upper Clapton Road. An August 1966 FBI source said he was teaching at Orthodox Jewish schools. Youngest child to that date born in London in December 1964, with an American embassy certificate, not a birth in the United States. Alien registration with the Metropolitan Police until 9 February 1969.
• Passport renewed at the London embassy in 1965, 1970 and 1975; refused in 1980; revocation upheld on appeal in January 1981. A 6 August 1966 Justice Department letter to United States Attorney Robert Morgenthau called extradition from England “very doubtful”. He was told of the indictment in 1978 by London solicitor Peter Brown, during unrelated civil litigation.

No plea, conviction or dismissal after April 1982 is in the published report. The charges are allegations. The 212 Upper Clapton Road address is the address on the 1973 and 1974 marriage certificates of David and Osias.

Children

Marriage certificates name him as father of the two elder sons. Emanuel is placed with them by the 1986 joint prosecution and the shared household, not by a certificate retrieved here. Rahel is the 1951 child on the passenger list. The December 1964 London birth is unnamed in the opinion. No General Register Office birth in London in 1964 or 1965 has been matched, and no GRO birth has been found for David, Osias or Emanuel, which is consistent with births outside England.

Jacob Schreiber (born 1936 on the earlier working note) is not placed in this household. He was separated as a son of Simon Schreiber. Joel Schreiber of the 1949 band is the Zucker line, not a son of Moses.

David and Emanuel: gold VAT, then property

David Schreiber (August 1952) of Upper Clapton Road and Emanuel Schreiber of 14 Craven Walk were convicted at the Old Bailey in April–May 1986 of making untrue VAT returns on gold (Antalya Ltd / Omeret–Omerton Ltd). David received six years, Emanuel four and a half. Each was ordered to pay £195,000 costs. Bankruptcy petitions followed on 1 July 1986. Orders were made on 8 June 1987: David, High Court 2077 of 1986, lately 143 Upper Clapton Road, described as company manager and jeweller; Emanuel, 2076 of 1986, lately 14 Craven Walk, company director and jeweller. David’s trustee was released on 27 March 1998. Property companies at the Clapton and Stamford Hill addresses begin in 1997, including Citeoffer, Davos and Sparkstone. Osias Schreiber was not a defendant in the 1986 case. He is on Citeoffer and Davos with David.

Lakeview voluntary windings of 25 April 2017 and the Limeview section 110 reconstructions of 17 September 2018, signed by David or Jacob at 147 Stamford Hill, are a later generation. They are not the 1986 estates.

Midos and Discovery Park

Midos Group (UK) Limited (08104268) was incorporated on 13 June 2012 at 147 Stamford Hill. Officers include David (appointed 13 June 2012), Mayer Schreiber (19 September 2017) and Rifka Niederman (secretary, 13 June 2012). Mayer, chief executive of Discovery Park, has described Midos as a family office and said the group acquired the park in 2016. Landlord vehicles for the park are registered at 147 Stamford Hill. Newpeak Properties Limited (03234332) holds the freehold filing of that building. Directors include David, Rifka and Harry Rothbard.

The Guardian has named holdings including the former Duke of York, Clapham; Cornmill Shopping Centre, Darlington; Idlewells, Sutton-in-Ashfield; Regent Centre, Newcastle; a Newhall Street block in Birmingham, with Miriam, Gyta and Osias; and Discovery Park. In March 2025 it reported the family as the largest users of a faith-room business-rates scheme. Dover District Council said it was seeking more than £1 million on Discovery Park units claimed as places of worship. In May 2026 the paper reported that Midos Management, associated with Elizabeth Endzweig, a daughter of David and Miriam, had collected at least £43 million from Lambeth since 2019 for temporary accommodation.

Instro Precision, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, is a tenant at Discovery Park. Palestine Action has attacked the factory and, on 29 May 2025, premises on Stamford Hill which it called the landlord’s. The family denied an operational link to the arms firm.
