Catherine Lewis Foundation
Not to be confused with the David and Ruth Lewis Family Charitable Trust or with the associated Lewis family which owns River Island
The Catherine Lewis Foundation (known until April 1991 as the David Lewis Charitable Foundation (The)) is a company limited by guarantee (company no. 01047390) with charitable status (charity no. 264175) created in 1972. As the original name suggests, the foundation was set up by David John Lewis, whose descendants are entitled to become directors of the company and trustees of the charity upon reaching adulthood.
The trust is sustained by gifts from one or more of the trustees.
The trust has donated to members of the Zionist movement (United Jewish Israel Appeal and the charitable arm of the Jewish National Fund UK) and the Israel lobby (the Board of Deputies of British Jews and Community Security Trust) and to organisations perpetuating Islamophobia (Civitas and the Henry Jackson Society).
The trust has funded the Israel-Diaspora Trust an organisation founded by the late Rabbi Sidney Brichto, a passionate supporter of Israel and scourge of its critics inside and outside the UK Jewish community.[1] It has also donated £25,000 to the Traditional Alternatives Foundation in 2008/9, which was involved directly in funding Civitas and the Centre for Social Cohesion, an Islamophobic think tank subsequently merged into the Henry Jackson Society.[2]
The foundation gave £6,500 to Civitas in 2006/7 and £25,000 in 2007/8.[3] It also funds the Israel-Diaspora Trust an organisation founded by the late Rabbi Sidney Brichto, a passionate supporter of Israel and scourge of its critics inside and outside the UK Jewish community.[4] The trust also donated £25,000 to the Traditional Alternatives Foundation in 2008/9.[5]
