The hacker was a former FRU colleague of Ingram who had met two News of the World journalists in Leeds in mid-2006, who had engaged him to "obtain information and documents about activities connected to my ongoing investigations relating to matters in Northern Ireland".[7] The Guardian reported in February 2012, that the hacker was Philip Campbell Smith: "The computer hacking involving Smith is alleged to have been carried out in July 2006 by sending Hurst an email containing a trojan virus that copied Hurst's emails and relayed them back to the hacker. It is claimed this was commissioned by Alex Marunchak, who was a senior editor on the News of the World when it was edited by Coulson.[8]

An un-named former soldier of the Force Research Unit is quoted suggesting Scappaticci may have received up to £2 million as a payoff. The paper also states Scappaticci is not in Italy or Tenerife as suggested elsewhere.[10]

The article stated: "The affidavit from DCI Taylor has never been read out in court and was part of other proceedings brought by the Stevens Inquiry to obtain documents for its investigation.
