Mishcon de Reya is a law and lobbying firm, based in London and with a New York office.

It employs more than 500 people, with over 300 lawyers offering a wide range of legal services to companies and individuals.

Lobbying services

The firm provides clients with the following lobbying services: 'Media Advocacy'; 'Policy Audits'; 'Public Affairs'.[1]

Mishcon de Reya says it can help clients 'articulate' their case to Government, regulators and the wider policy community.

'Whether your organisation is seeking to input into policy or engage with Government decision makers, navigate complex regulatory challenges, manage a hostile media environment or generate media interest, our integrated team of professionals can help you articulate your case and navigate the landscape.'[2]

Its 'public advocacy' team is made up of 'public policy experts, lawyers, academics, and communications professionals, [which] work with journalists and statisticians, think-tanks and pressure groups and NGOs'.

Brexit lobbying

Mishcon de Reya has joined up with lobbying agency Kreab, it says, 'to provide clients and their businesses with comprehensive advice on the challenges and opportunities arising out of Brexit, combining both 'legal and public affairs expertise'.[3]

After the Brexit referendum in 2016, the firm also started legal action to demand the British government win legislative approval from Parliament before triggering a formal divorce from the European Union. It said its clients were a group of concerned British citizens, but it did not name them or say who was paying for the legal action. The group was led by Gina Miller.

In July 2017, it was confirmed that the law firm was talking to Labour's shadow Brexit secretary, Keir Starmer, about a possible role with the law firm. Starmer had previously given legal advice to the firm, according to his register of financial interests. He spent four months in 2016 as a legal adviser to the Mishcon de Reya Academy, an arm of the firm.[4]

Controversies and high profile clients

In 2012, a partner at the firm, Kevin Steele, was jailed for five and a half years after helping a fraudster apply for a multimillion pound loan from a EFG private bank using fake documents.[5]

In 2013, Charlotte Harris, a partner at Mishcon, represented Chris Huhne in his trial for perverting the course of justice.[6]

In 2014 the firm represented Leon Brittan when he was accused of raping a 19-year-old girl.[7]

In 1996 the firm and Anthony Julius in particular was chosen by Princess Diana to represent her in her divorce from Prince Charles.[8]
