Institute of Medicine
Background
The Institute of Medicine was chartered in 1970 and in its website states that the American 'nation turns to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies for science-based advice on matters of biomedical science, medicine, and health'[1].
The IOM describes itself as a nonprofit organization which 'provides a vital service by working outside the framework of government to ensure scientifically informed analysis and independent guidance. The IOM's mission is to serve as adviser to the nation to improve health. The Institute provides unbiased, evidence-based, and authoritative information and advice concerning health and science policy to policy-makers, professionals, leaders in every sector of society, and the public at large'[2].

- Mary Lake Polan, Board of Directors member for Wyeth pharmaceutical company, is reported to have served on the Council of the Institute of Medicine[4]. Polan is also a Director of Quidel Corporation and Professor and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and 'a member of many professional societies' who's names are not disclosed. Polan's biography goes on to describe how she 'has served on numerous medical and health committees, including the National Institutes of Health, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) and the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protection (SACHRP) for the Department of Health and Human Services'.
Board Members
The IOM is organized into 8 oversight Boards. These consist of the 'Board on African Science Academy Development (joint with the National Research Council [NRC]); Board on Children, Youth, and Families (joint with NRC); Food and Nutrition Board; Board on Global Health; Board on Health Care Services; Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice; Board on Health Sciences Policy; and Board on Military and Veterans Health'[5].

Board on Health Sciences Policy - Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders
- Daniel J Burch - Executive Vice President of Research and Development and Chief Medical Officer of CeNeRx Biopharma. Burch has also worked for Abbott Laboratories, SmithKlineBeecham and GlaxoSmithKline[6].
- Marc Barlow - GE Healthcare Inc.. Prior to joining GE, Barlow was the Marketing Director of Sanofi-Aventis in the UK[7].
- Richard Frank - Vice President of clinical and medical strategy at GE Healthcare Inc.[8]
- Atul Pande - Senior Vice President, Neurosciences MDC at GlaxoSmithKline. Pande was previously the Chief Medical Officer for Cenerx Biopharma and Vice President of Neurosciences for Pfizer Inc[9].
- Steven Marc Paul - Executive Vice President of Science and Technology and President of the Lilly Research Laboratories (LRL) of Eli Lilly and Company[10]. Paul also serves on the executive board of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America's (PhRMA) Science and Regulatory Committee (and is their 'incoming chairperson') and served as a member of the National Advisory General Medical Sciences Council and as Medical Director in the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service
- William Z Potter - Vice President, Franchise Integrator Neuroscience at Merck Research Laboratories. Prior to Merck, Potter was involved with Eli Lilly and Company[11].
- Roy E Twyman - Vice President, Franchise Development in the Central Nervous System/Pain Area of Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development[12].
- Frank D Yocca - Vice President and Head of CNS and Pain Drug Discovery for AstraZeneca. Frank previously served as Executive Director at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute[13]
- Stevin H Zorn - Vice President and Head of Central Nervous System Disorders Research at Pfizer Global Research and Development (he also co-leads Pfizer’s CNS Therapeutic Area Leadership Team)[14].
