Alcohol Network
The Alcohol Network aims to develop pledges for action in promoting sensible alcohol consumption. The network is chaired by Jeremy Beadles, the Chief Executive of the Wine & Spirit Trade Association and supported by Paul Burstow MP, Minister of State for Care Services at the Department of Health.[1]
Those invited to participate in the network are listed below, however in March 2011 six leading alcohol charities and health advocacy groups refused to join the group arguing that the government was not taking a robust enough approach with the alcohol industry in relation to public health. The six include Alcohol Concern, the British Association for the Study of the Liver, the British Liver Trust, the British Medical Association, the Institute of Alcohol Studies and the Royal College of Physicians. == Corporate Involvement in Public Health ==
The extent of corporate involvement in the government's public health network was made public after a question in the Commons from shadow health minister Sharon Hodgson [3] Question forced Anne Milton to admit:
- Other than multi-stakeholder meetings, since May 2010, departmental Ministers have held meetings with Unilever, McDonalds and Unacom, while the Department's Special Advisers held meetings with Diageo and Kellogg's. During the same period, departmental officials have held meetings with Diageo, Unilever, Nestle, McDonalds, the Advertising Association, 23Red, Freud Communications, M and C Saatchi, VCCP, MCBD and Fast Track Agency.
