Maria Allen was appointed special adviser for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in 2013. She initially worked for DECC ministers Greg Barker MP and Baroness Verma, but has worked since July 2014 for Amber Rudd, previously parliamentary under secretary of state, and now minister for energy and climate change.
Allen was originally appointed at the insistence of prime minister David Cameron, to support the Conservative ministers at DECC. [1]

A former lobbyist, Allen worked as the public affairs manager (account director) for high-profile lobbying firm Burson-Marsteller for six years from 2007 until 2013. Before this, she was an intern at Societe Generale Equipment Finance in 2005 for six months. [2]
Allen was also a researcher for the Institute of Economic Affairs, a seminal free market think-tank based in London, in 2005. [2]
Education
Allen attended the London School of Journalism in 2010. She also obtained an MSc in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2007. Allen went to the University of Bristol where she studied Politics and French in 2002. [2]
