+ | *Farish A. Noor West creating Islamic bogey New Straits Times (Malaysia) March 8, 1996 Insight; Pg. 11
+ | :For instance, I think that many people in the West find it very hard to
+ | believe that on a Friday some people are prepared to go to the mosque and
+ | pray when the fact is that you can hardly fill a single church in England
+ | on a Sunday. Therefore it could be said that it is the lack of confidence
+ | in yourself, in the West, that drives this reaction against Islam.
+ | |||
+ | :Many people think of this reaction against Islam in terms of hatred and
+ | racism, but it is much more a panic-like reaction to Islam, because Islam
+ | seems to stand for a consistency that they themselves lack.
+ | |||
+ | :Therefore there is also an element of ambivalence in the Western
+ | reaction to Islam: it is driven by prejudice, but also envy and jealousy
+ | for something which the West no longer thinks it has, namely a firm
+ | conviction in its beliefs and ideologies. Its almost as if the West is
+ | looking at Muslims and saying to itself Look at them. They still have
+ | their beliefs and traditions around which they can mobilise and identify
+ | themselves. Why can't we do the same?' The fear of Islam is thus linked to
+ | a sense of loss of certainty within the West itself.

Interviews with Furedi
- Farish A. Noor West creating Islamic bogey New Straits Times (Malaysia) March 8, 1996 Insight; Pg. 11
- For instance, I think that many people in the West find it very hard to
believe that on a Friday some people are prepared to go to the mosque and pray when the fact is that you can hardly fill a single church in England on a Sunday. Therefore it could be said that it is the lack of confidence in yourself, in the West, that drives this reaction against Islam.
- Many people think of this reaction against Islam in terms of hatred and
racism, but it is much more a panic-like reaction to Islam, because Islam seems to stand for a consistency that they themselves lack.
- Therefore there is also an element of ambivalence in the Western
reaction to Islam: it is driven by prejudice, but also envy and jealousy for something which the West no longer thinks it has, namely a firm conviction in its beliefs and ideologies. Its almost as if the West is looking at Muslims and saying to itself Look at them. They still have their beliefs and traditions around which they can mobilise and identify themselves. Why can't we do the same?' The fear of Islam is thus linked to a sense of loss of certainty within the West itself.
