In 1997 he left to join Goldman Sachs, where he ended up as president of the bank’s European arm. Departing in 2005, he founded Simon Robertson Associates LLP, a small financial advisory company in London.[2]

Robertson joined the board of HSBC in 2006 as a non-executive director and then a senior non-executive director in 2007.[3]
