Jewish Care is a British charity providing health and social care services primarily for the Jewish community in London and South East England. Formed on 1 January 1990 by the merger of the Jewish Welfare Board and the Jewish Blind Society, it is the largest such organisation serving the UK Jewish community, supporting over 12,000 people each week through more than 70 centres and services.

The charity operates care homes, community centres, independent and assisted living schemes, dementia services, mental health support via Jami, a Holocaust Survivors’ Centre, and the Jewish Care Direct helpline. Services are guided by Jewish values of warmth, kindness, honesty, respect and dignity, and are offered without assessment of religious observance. It employs staff of over 70 nationalities and relies on more than 2,000 volunteers.

Jewish Care ranks among the 100 largest UK charities by expenditure. In the year ending 31 March 2025 it reported income of £81.837 million (including £30.79 million in donations and legacies and £15.65 million from government contracts) and expenditure of £72.3 million.

History

The roots of Jewish Care extend to early nineteenth-century Jewish welfare bodies. The Institution for the Relief of the Indigent Blind of the Jewish Persuasion was founded in 1819 and later became the Jewish Blind Society. The Board of Guardians for the Relief of the Jewish Poor (commonly the Jewish Board of Guardians) was established in London’s East End in 1859 to coordinate relief for the Jewish poor; it evolved into the Jewish Welfare Board. Other predecessor bodies included the Jewish Home and Hospital at Tottenham (founded 1889), Food for the Jewish Poor (a soup kitchen), and the Jewish Association for the Protection of Girls, Women and Children.

On 1 January 1990 the Jewish Welfare Board and Jewish Blind Society merged to form Jewish Care. Subsequent amalgamations incorporated the Jewish Home and Hospital at Tottenham, Food for the Jewish Poor, the British Tay–Sachs Foundation, Clore Manor (Friends of the London Jewish Hospital), Hyman Fine House, Stepney Jewish (B’nai B’rith) Clubs and Settlements, Sinclair House (Redbridge Jewish Youth and Community Centre), Sunridge Court and, most recently, Jami (the Jewish Association for Mental Illness).

Lord Levy, previously a trustee of the Jewish Welfare Board, was instrumental in the 1990 merger, served as Chair from 1992, President from 2000 and Life President from September 2020. Dame Gail Ronson organised the 125th anniversary celebration of the Jewish Board of Guardians in 1983, attended by the then Prince of Wales and Princess of Wales.

The Holocaust Survivors’ Centre opened in Hendon in January 1993. Major campus developments have included the Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus in Golders Green and the forthcoming Sugar and Ronson Campus in Redbridge (scheduled to open June 2026), funded in significant part by pledges from the families of Lord Sugar and Gerald Ronson and Dame Gail Ronson. In 2025 Jewish Care marked its 35th anniversary, raising a record £5.5 million at its annual dinner.

Services

Jewish Care provides residential and nursing care in nine homes, four retirement living schemes, one assisted living scheme, nine community centres, three specialist dementia centres, and outreach including Meals on Wheels, social work, family carers support and bereavement services. It maintains a dedicated centre serving approximately 250 Holocaust survivors and refugees. Through Jami, wholly owned by Jewish Care (Charity Reg. No. 802559), it delivers mental health support. The Jewish Care Direct helpline handles around 21,000 enquiries annually.

Services emphasise culturally specific care, including kosher food, Yiddish conversation groups, festival celebrations and person-centred dementia approaches such as DementiAbility. The charity has received national awards for palliative and end-of-life care.

Its Strategy 2030 (“Altogether Stronger”) aims to double the number of people supported through community services, prioritising dementia care, mental health and end-of-life care, and to raise £100 million in voluntary donations over five years.

Patrons, donors and fundraising

Jewish Care raises substantial voluntary income through Patrons (minimum annual donation £12,500), Friends programmes, legacies, challenge events and major annual dinners. Patrons have included the 4 Daughters Charitable Trust, Lord Alliance of Manchester, Sir Victor Blank, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bogod Family, the Sir Clive Bourne Family Trust and numerous private individuals and family trusts. Major donors and supporters have included the Sugar and Ronson families (for the Redbridge campus), the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation, and figures such as Lloyd Dorfman. Annual dinners have been addressed by UK prime ministers and attended by senior politicians including Health Secretary Wes Streeting. In 2025 the dinner raised £5.5 million; a subsequent event raised £5.6 million. Lord Levy has been described as instrumental in fundraising, having raised tens of millions for the charity and its predecessors.

Politics and relationship to Zionism and pro-Israel groups

Jewish Care is a communal welfare organisation rather than a political body. Its leadership includes individuals with longstanding links to pro-Israel and communal institutions. Life President The Lord Levy is Honorary President of the United Jewish Israel Appeal (UJIA). He previously served as special envoy to the Middle East under Tony Blair.

Jewish Care is a constituent member of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC).

Annual dinners have included a toast to the President of the State of Israel. At the 2025 dinner, Professor David Latchman CBE proposed the toast to the President of the State of Israel.

Following the 7 October 2023 attacks in Israel, Jewish Care’s 2023–24 annual report stated: “Sadly, following the tragic events in Israel on October 7, shockwaves ran through the community as we tried to comprehend the enormity of the events that had taken place in Israel on the darkest day the Jewish world has experienced since the end of World War II. We sent messages of support to all those affected; those mourning their relatives and friends, those who lost their lives in the terror attack, those who were missing, and all those who are now living with the impact of the war. We have been supporting people here in the UK who have loved ones living in Israel and standing together as a community in support of all those affected as we hope and pray for peace.” The report further noted that members of the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre “took part in a campaign on social media to call for the release of the hostages” and that the charity “worked with the Community Security Trust (CST) and the Board of Deputies to create safe havens where all those we support could enjoy and celebrate Jewish life and be with others at a difficult time.” CEO Daniel Carmel-Brown wrote in January 2024: “Since the tragic events in Israel on October 7 and during the dark times and distress that followed, our caring staff and volunteers have reassured and supported those who rely on us. We adapted programmes to create a safe space to talk and to be together, especially vital for our members at Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors’ Centre.”
