Type Trust (removed)
Founded 1983-01-08 (registered)
Dissolved 2011-08-23 (removed: ceased to exist)
Registration ID Registered charity 326264
Area served Throughout England And Wales, Canada, Israel, United States

The Talmud Education Trust was a registered charity in England and Wales from 1983 until removal on 23 August 2011.[1] Register areas included England and Wales, Canada, Israel and the United States. Latest recorded income in the extract is £6,952,053 for the year ended 31 August 2008. The register gives the reason for removal as "ceased to exist".[2] No accounts of the trust itself were recovered, but the published accounts of two grant-making charities, The Helping Foundation and Newmarston Limited, record grants to it totalling £11,839,000 in financial years ending between February 2006 and December 2009, and the accounts of the Bluston Charitable Settlement give the trust's charity number for a £10,000 grant to "Mechinoh Boys School" in 2005–06 (see Donors).

Objects and activities

The charity's registered objects read: "THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION AND SUCH OTHER PURPOSES AS SHALL FOR THE TIME BEING BE CHARITABLE PURPOSES ACCORDING TO THE LAW OF ENGLAND AND WALES."[1]

Register classifications: General Charitable Purposes, Education/training, The Prevention Or Relief Of Poverty, Religious Activities.[1]

Areas of operation recorded on the register: Throughout England And Wales, Canada, Israel, United States.[1]

The governing document was a trust deed dated 2 July 1982. The register recorded that the charity helped children and young people, "people of a particular ethnic or racial origin" and other charities or voluntary bodies, and that it made grants to individuals and organisations and provided buildings, facilities or open space.[2] A January 2011 capture of the register showed "no information recorded" for its activities.[3]

In the Bluston Charitable Settlement's grants list for the year to 5 April 2006, a £10,000 grant to "Mechinoh Boys School" is shown with the charity number 326264, the trust's number.[4] Mechinoh School is an independent secondary school for Orthodox Jewish boys aged 11 to 16 at 13 Upper Park Road, Salford (URN 105999).[5][6] Ofsted reports give its opening date as September 1982 and named its proprietor as "Mechinoh School Organisation" between 2008 and 2013;[6][7] the Department for Education register records an open date of 11 January 1985 and gives the current proprietor as Mechinoh L'Yeshiva,[5] a charity (1161782) registered in 2015.[1] Ofsted judged the school inadequate in June 2024 and found in March 2026 that it still did not meet all of the independent school standards.[8][9] The Helping Foundation and Newmarston Limited accounts do not describe any of their grants to the trust as being for the school; both listed separate grants to "Mechina Boys School" in 2009–10 and 2010 (£2,000 from Newmarston and £8,000 from the Helping Foundation).[10][11] No other source consulted ties the trust or its number to the school.

Its register entry describes its activities as "The provision and maintenance of a secondary school for high school age boys in Manchester."[18]
  • 2021–22: Ofsted reported in March 2023 that at the time of the May 2022 inspection there had been no proprietor in place for the preceding 12 months, and that the headteacher took over as proprietor during that inspection.[17]
  • 19 July 2023: the Department for Education wrote to the school confirming that the proposed change to the proprietorship arrangements had been agreed.[19]
  • November 2023 onwards: Ofsted reports of November 2023, June 2024 and March 2026 name the proprietor as Mechinoh L'Yeshiva.[19][8][9]

The Charity Commission's Register of Merged Charities has no entry linking the trust and Mechinoh L'Yeshiva, and none of the sources cited records a transfer from the trust.[20]
