The Gazette is the United Kingdom's official public record. Published since 1665, it is formally the combination of three journals of record: The London Gazette, The Belfast Gazette and The Edinburgh Gazette.[1] It consists largely of statutory notices that the law requires to be advertised, and most notices relate to corporate and personal insolvency or deceased estates.[1]

Notices have legal standing, and the Gazette is given special protection by the Documentary Evidence Act 1882. The National Archives, through His Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO), manages publication of all three editions for the King's Printer under a concessionary contract, and notice placers must register with The Stationery Office (TSO).[1]

History

The first issue appeared on 15 November 1665 as The Oxford Gazette, after Charles II moved his court to Oxford to escape the Great Plague in London. It was renamed The London Gazette in 1666, when the court returned to the capital.[1]

Content

The Gazette lists more than 450 notice types. Some must by law be published in the Gazette, some in the Gazette and elsewhere, and others are optional.[1] Notices can be placed only by registered and verified persons acting in an official capacity, such as insolvency practitioners, solicitors and executors, and by verified organisations such as the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood and government departments, including the Ministry of Defence. Notice placers are solely responsible for the content of their notices.[1]

The Gazette also publishes the King's Birthday and New Year Honours lists, Royal Assent to Acts of Parliament, and weekly Ministry of Defence supplements of military promotions and appointments. It carries a profile of every company registered with Companies House and a weekly Company Law Supplement. Its data is free to reuse under the Open Government Licence unless stated otherwise.[1]
