Talmud Torah London is an independent strictly Orthodox Jewish day school for boys aged 5–14 in Stamford Hill / Upper Clapton, Hackney. It operates as a community-wide independent school rather than as the institution of a single Hasidic court. It is run by the company and charity Talmud Torah London Ltd (company 08428638; charity 1161668).[1][2]

The school was registered in 2016 and previously operated from 37 Moresby Road, London E5 9LE. Its registered office remains 35 Moresby Road, E5 9LE. It later moved to 69 Amhurst Park, N16 5AW.[1][3]

Background and independence

Talmud Torah London serves the local Hasidic and broader strictly Orthodox (Charedi) community in Hackney but is not registered or described as belonging exclusively to one dynastic court (such as Satmar, Belz or Bobov). Ofsted and Department for Education listings give its religious character as Jewish / Orthodox without a specific court designation. Its funding draws on multi-communal charitable intermediaries, including the Asser Bishvil Foundation and Achisomoch Aid Company Limited.[1][4]

Headteacher since September 2022 is Eli Spitzer, previously of Talmud Torah Tiferes Shlomo.[1]

Premises and family connections

The school’s early premises and the company’s registered office are on Moresby Road in Upper Clapton. Electoral roll data for 37 Moresby Road show long-term residency by members of the Schreiber and Stern families, including Moses Schreiber / Moshe Schreiber, Sarah Schreiber, Mordechai Stern and Resy Stern. Companies House filings linked to the address have also listed Moshe / Moishe and Schlom Schreiber among persons of significant control or related parties.

These property links connect to an older generation: an earlier Moses Schreiber (born 1931) lived at 48 Moresby Road in the mid-1960s and was described in contemporary US federal records as a teacher at a Jewish school after relocating from New York. Family intermarriages between the Schreiber and Stern lines are also recorded. The use of private family-held property and corporate structures has been cited as one factor in the school’s independent, non-dynastic character.[5]

The school later moved its operational premises to 69 Amhurst Park without initial planning permission. Retrospective applications were refused; Hackney Council issued an enforcement notice requiring cessation of school use by January 2027 and removal of unauthorised works. Appeals were unsuccessful. The future of the Amhurst Park site remains subject to planning constraints, with the school operating across sites including an early years provision.[6]

Ofsted and scale

The school is registered for boys aged 5–14 with a capacity of 125 (approximately 120 pupils on roll). Recent Ofsted inspections have judged it Good (2023 standard inspection) or as meeting expected standards (2026). It has undergone multiple additional and material-change inspections related to premises and age-range expansions.[7]

Governance

The proprietor is Talmud Torah London Ltd (incorporated 4 March 2013; registered office 35 Moresby Road, E5 9LE). Current directors recorded at Companies House include Menachem Sholom Geldzahler, Alexander Julius Halpert, Devorah Geldzahler, Shlomo Lew, and (appointed March 2026) Rifka Niederman, Basya Markovits and Toby Spitz. Full historical appointments are recorded on the company page.[2]

The charity’s objects are the advancement of the Orthodox Jewish faith through the provision of religious and general education. Recent accounts show income in the region of £900,000–£1 million, drawn from fees/charitable activities and donations, with significant government grant income in some years.[4]
