JCoSS (the Jewish Community Secondary School) is a state-funded, voluntary aided Jewish secondary school in New Barnet, in the London Borough of Barnet. It opened on 1 September 2010 and had 1,356 pupils on the Department for Education register in October 2026.[1] Ofsted describes it as having "a pluralist Jewish religious character".[2] The school's foundation body, The Jewish Community Secondary School Trust, states that its objective was "to create the UK's first truly inclusive, state-funded Jewish secondary school".[3]

In 2011 the school's website said that its ethos "supports the right of Israel to exist within safe and recognised borders and is developing strong links with Israel".[4] Its current ethos page says that the Israeli flag is displayed alongside the British flag "in the Heart Space of the School".[5]

History

The Jewish Community Secondary School Trust was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee on 15 December 2004 (company number 05313603) and registered as a charity on 19 January 2005 (charity number 1107705).[6][3] Ofsted reported in 2012 that the school "opened in new, purpose-built accommodation in September 2010" with 342 students in Years 7 and 8 and a projected roll of 1,310. The chair of governors was Mike Grabiner and the headteacher was Jeremy Stowe-Lindner.[7] The sixth form opened in September 2012. By the 2015 inspection, when Patrick Moriarty was headteacher and Jeremy Kosky chaired the governing body, there were 1,111 pupils.[8] In 2022 the chair of governors was Mark Freedman.[2] By December 2023 the website named Melanie Lee as headteacher.[9]

In January 2011 the school's home page described it as "a genuinely inclusive cross-communal school, embracing the entire Jewish community regardless of affiliation or practice", adding that "with a love of Israel and a passion for hard work and communal leadership, our students embody the very best of British and Jewish values".[10]

Religious character

The Department for Education records JCoSS's religious character as Jewish.[1] In 2012 Ofsted reported that the school had established "a distinct identity … as an inclusive, cross-communal school".[7] In 2015 it found that pupils "readily engage in conversation about the pluralistic nature of their school".[8] The school's current ethos page states that "JCoSS is a pluralist Jewish learning community", citing the rabbinic phrase elu v'elu divrei elohim chayim ("these and these are the words of the Living God").[5]

Relation to Israel and Zionism

Website statements, 2011 and 2025

In March 2011 the school's FAQ page "Do you support Israel?" read:

"The school ethos supports the right of Israel to exist within safe and recognised borders and is developing strong links with Israel. It has developed a knowledge of and relationship with Israel's people, history and land, and takes pride in its achievements. There are regular visitors and guests from Israel, internet links with pupils in Israeli schools and residential visits to Israel. In addition JCoSS has generated close links with Israeli schools and teachers."[4]

The ethos page captured in October 2025 contains neither this text nor a link to the FAQ. It says instead that students "explore and reflect upon their own relationship to God, to Jewish history, to Israel and to the Jewish community, with the aim of deepening their commitment to and love of כלל ישראל (clal yisrael/the Jewish people)". In its section on British values it adds: "The British flag (together with the Israeli flag) is on prominent display in the Heart Space of the School."[5] The January 2013 version of the ethos page did not mention Israel.[11]

Israel Journey

The school's website carried posts for its "Israel Journey" in 2014 and 2017.[12][9] In July 2012 its news page linked to "a recent article from the Times of Israel".[13]
