Aberdeen Hebrew Congregation is a Scottish charity, number SC002901, constituted as a trust and on the Scottish Charity Register from 13 September 1945. The register gives its address as Aberdeen Synagogue, 74 Dee Street, Aberdeen AB11 6DS, and says the trust "was set up to provide a Synagogue Building to the Jewish Community in Aberdeen and Nort [sic] East Scotland". Its purposes include holding the trust fund "to be used only for the carrying on of religious worship, education and related religious and social activities all of orthodox Jewish character", and the trustees "may make the Trust Property available for the use of the Aberdeen Synagogue and Jewish Community Centre".[1]

According to the trust's 2025 annual report, four trustee roles are specified in the deed of trust: the Chief Rabbi, the Honorary President, the Honorary Vice President and the Honorary Treasurer. The report states that "Chief Rabbi Mirvis is a Trustee as the successor to Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz a founding Trustee of the Trust", and that under the deed the building "shall only be used for such purposes and activities as have the approval and sanction of the Chief Rabbi for the time being of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Empire".[2]

History

The 2025 report states that on 24 May 2016 a new SCIO, the Aberdeen Synagogue and Jewish Community Centre (SC046585), "was incorporated to enable the AHC Trust to transfer its assets and to be wound up". It says that all bank and building society accounts have been closed and residual funds transferred to the SCIO, and that the trust "does not have any current assets or liabilities" other than the building. Its balance sheet carries "74 Dee Street at cost" at £1,050. The report also says that serious faults with the roof were found at the beginning of 2020 and that the repairs were completed by October 2022.[2]
