Stop Islamization of America
Stop Islamization of America, which is reportedly 'known to be controlled by'[1] the American Freedom Defense Initiative, is an American anti-Islam[2] organization. It is led by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, who took it over in 2010 at the request of Anders Gravers, the leader of Stop Islamisation of Europe, of which it is the American affiliate. SIOA was formed in September 2009. DL Adams and Kendra Adams of the New English Review were named as the SIOA founders.[3][4]
SIOA gained attention from its vocal opposition to the construction of Park51.[2]
Launch
On its launch on 25 SEptember 2009 in Washington DC Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) described itself as 'an educational and human rights organization with two foundational principles: Love and Compassion.' Its 'mission' was said to 'to educate the American people about the political doctrine of Islam, its history, Sharia (Islamic Law), and Jihad. SIOA believes that Sharia Law is incompatible with our Constitution and Bill of Rights.' Seven 'experts' were scheduled to speak at the launch on 'Islam, terrorism and civic responsibility':
- Rabbi Jon Hausman – Conservative political moderator
- Rebecca Bynum – Publisher, Senior Managing Editor – New English Review
- Dave Gaubatz – Veteran counter-terrorism investigator, author
- Catherine Martin – Veteran grass roots activist, Northern Virginia
- John Cosgrove – Counter-terrorism consultant
- Martin Mawyer – Founder, Christian Action Network
- Jerry Gordon – Senior Editor – New English Review[4]
Orientation
It is labeled as a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League[5] and the Southern Poverty Law Center.[6]
