Background
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research in the U.S.[1].
The NIH describes how it 'annually invests over $28 billion in medical research. More than 83% of the NIH's funding is awarded through almost 50,000 competitive grants to more than 325,000 researchers at over 3,000 universities, medical schools, and other research institutions in every state and around the world'[2].
People
Mary Lake Polan, Board of Directors member for Wyeth pharmaceutical company is reported to have also served on a committee for the National Institutes of Health[3]. Polan is also a Director of Quidel Corporation and Professor and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and 'a member of many professional societies' who's names are not disclosed. Polan's biography goes on to describe how she 'has served on numerous medical and health committees, including the Council of the Institute of Medicine, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) and the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protection (SACHRP) for the Department of Health and Human Services'.
