Andrew Shortland

Occupation Academic

Andrew Shortland is Professor of Archaeological Science and Director of Research for Cranfield Defence and Security at Cranfield University, and was Director of the Cranfield Forensic Institute from 2016 to 2023.[1] He was on the Institute for Statecraft expert team,[2] and is named in a list of members of the Specialist Group Military Intelligence (SGMI) published by Anonymous in January 2019.[3]

Career

According to Cranfield University, after studying geology and prehistoric archaeology at the University of Oxford he was "recruited into the Ministry of Defence, Whitehall to work for six years in a series of security related posts". He then returned to Oxford for a DPhil in Egyptology and moved to Cranfield in 2005. The university's profile says he "is a specialist reserve officer with a leadership and recruitment role in a unit that provides experts to advise the military and government departments on current and future issues".[1]

Integrity Initiative

The Institute for Statecraft expert team list gives him a "(DV)" marker and describes the Cranfield Forensic Unit as "heavily engaged with the Defence Geo-Spatial Intelligence Fusion Centre in developing location techniques".[2] The Working Group on Syria, Propaganda and Media read the marker as developed vetting.[4] In the "Tor Team" table he is listed under "Digital forensics" (15 years).[5]
