Barrie Axford

Occupation Academic

Barrie Axford is Emeritus Professor of Politics at Oxford Brookes University.[1] He was on the Institute for Statecraft expert team,[2] and is named in a list of members of the Specialist Group Military Intelligence (SGMI) published by Anonymous in January 2019.[3]

Career

Axford taught at Stanford University's overseas studies programme from 1970 to 1973 and at the University of Southampton from 1973, before moving in 1975 to Oxford Polytechnic, later Oxford Brookes University.[1] He was founding director of the university's Centre for Global Politics, Economy and Society,[4] and is a Senior Research Associate at the consultancy Oxford XXI.[5] His books include Theories of Globalization (2013) and Mere Connection: the World-Making Power of New Media (2018).[1]

Integrity Initiative

The Institute for Statecraft expert team list describes him as a specialist in globalisation and new media "focused on Wider Europe, in particular the Ukraine, Caucasus and the Central Asian Republics", researching "the effectiveness of 'Western' strategies in countering the activities of adversaries".[2] In the "Tor Team" table his role is "Academic liaison" (20 years): "Linking universities into the network; counter measures".[6] The list published by Anonymous repeats the expert-team biography and states no military role.[3]
