Lebanon and the Litani, 1948
On 24 May 1948 Ben-Gurion wrote in his diary that the Carmeli Brigade's "role is to occupy southern Lebanon – assisted by the bombing of Tyre, Sidon, and Beirut". He continued: "Lebanon is the weak link in the Arab coalition. The Muslim government is artificial and easy to destabilize. A Christian state should be established with the Litani [River] as its southern border. We'll form an alliance with it."[2] In 2026 Israeli ministers called for the Litani River to be Israel's northern border; see Greater Israel and Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon (2024–present).
