Jo Cox was the Labour Party MP for Batley and Spen from May 2015 until 16 June 2016 when she died as the result of a brutal shooting attack in her West Yorkshire constituency. [1] [2] Far right extremist Thomas Mair was found guilty of her murder in November 2016.

Ex-charity sector worker becomes an MP in the 2015 general election

Cox replaced Mike Wood the previous Labour MP who served this constituency from 1997 until he retired in 2015. [3] Cox retained this Labour safe seat with a majority of 6,057 in the 2015 general election. [2]

Cox started her career as a political adviser to Labour MP Joan Walley and then Glenys Kinnock Labour MEP, before pursuing a career in the charitable sector working for Oxfam, Save the Children and the NSPCC. [4]
