Bloc Identitaire
Bloc Identitaire (BI) is a French organisation that has been described as a 'radical Right' street movement that campaigns against immigration and what it sees as 'the Islamisation' of Europe'.[1]
History
BI was founded in April 2003 and became a formal political party in 2009.[1]
Ideology
According to research carried out by Hope Not Hate in 2011, BI 'spearheads the "Identity movement" in France and across Europe' and 'describes itself as "identitarian" as opposed to nationalist'. It 'campaigns for regional/local identity and European cultural unity on an ethno-cultural basis'.[1]
Activities
On 18 December 2010, BI reportedly organised an 'Assises Internationales sur L’Islamisation de nos Pays' (International Congress on the Islamisation of Europe) in Paris.[1]
In March 2012 it organised a rally in Paris which was addressed by Jared Taylor, founder and editor of American Renaissance, and Filip Dewinter of the far-right Belgian Vlaams Belang party.[1]
It is also said to have established ‘Identity Houses’ in cities across France.[1]
BI activists have reportedly been involved in the Ligue de Défense Française (LDF), the name of which suggests it was modelled on the English Defence League.[1]
