Paddy Tipping (born 24 October 1949, Halifax, Yorkshire) is a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sherwood from 1992 to 2010.

Background

Tipping was Parliamentary Secretary to the Privy Council office (1999-2001) and at the same time Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, and was Deputy Leader of the House of Commons for the second time in 2007. He was Chairman of the sub-committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (2001-2005).[1]

Pro-nuclear activities

Celebrating PGES anniversary with EDF Energy Chairman

Tipping is a former chairman of the House of Commons Associate Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies (PGES). In March 2010 while he was still at the helm, PGES celebrated its 30th anniversary with a high level reception at 11 Downing Street 'by kind permission of the Chancellor of the Exchequer'. Attendees included EDF Energy chief executive Vincent de Rivaz; the then Energy Minister Rt Hon Lord Hunt of Kings Heath OBE; founder Secretary David Lambie; Maggie Darling and the then Chairman Paddy Tipping MP.

Urgent need to push ahead on new build

In November 2008 at a Labour Party conference fringe meeting organised by Nuclear Dialogue, Tipping called for ministers 'to press ahead with the building of a new generation of stations' saying he was fed up with the 'endless' white papers produced on energy policy.

"We have an agenda, what we don't have is action," he said. "We need to have early decisions to bring new nuclear on stream. Companies like EDF are interested in investing in nuclear in this country and I believe the government has to facilitate discussions and back nuclear power."[2]
