Nir Barkat was elected Mayor of Jerusalem in November 2008. He is a high-tech entrepreneur millionaire and a secularist.
He rejects the idea that East Jerusalem should be the capital of a future Palestinian state and has supported controversial proposals for an area in the Palestinian East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan to be turned into an archaeological park. Barkat is also Honorary Chairman of the Jerusalem Foundation.
