The Movement for Freedom of Information (Hebrew: התנועה לחופש המידע) is an Israeli non-profit that works to promote transparency in public institutions, strengthen oversight of public authorities and encourage the public to use its right to information.[1] It has sought information about the state's covert and outsourced propaganda bodies through freedom of information requests and court petitions. These include requests on Kela Shlomo in 2018 and a 2025 petition against the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs.[2]
Kela Shlomo (2018)
The Israel Ministry of Justice documents released in April 2024 by the hacking group Anonymous for Justice were published by Distributed Denial of Secrets; they have not been independently verified. According to them, the Movement for Freedom of Information and a journalist filed freedom of information requests about Kela Shlomo in January 2018. All were refused except for the release of a legal opinion by Deputy Attorney General Dina Zilber.[3]
Ministry of Diaspora Affairs petition (2025)
The Seventh Eye reported that in November 2024 the movement asked the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs for information about the "public opinion and influence experts" that Minister Amichai Chikli corresponded with on messaging apps, and about the ministry's contracts with them. The ministry refused. It argued that the messages were held on the minister's personal phone and so did not count as information "held by a public authority". In May 2025 the movement petitioned the Jerusalem District Court to force disclosure.[2]
