Major General Jonathan Shaw (Jonathan David Shaw) is a retired British Army officer who commanded British forces in Basra in 2007 and was later a director of the CSSF contractor Optima Defence & Security Group. He is not to be confused with the former Labour MP Jonathan Shaw.[1][2]

Military career

ParaData, the Airborne Assault Museum's archive, records that Shaw "joined The Parachute Regiment in 1980 and served as a platoon commander in 3 PARA through the Falklands War", commanded 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (1997–99), 12 (Mechanized) Brigade, Multi-National Brigade (Centre) in Kosovo and the Multi-National Division (South East) in Iraq (2007). He was Chief of Staff, UK Land Forces from September 2007, then Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (International Security Policy) and, from January 2011, Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Global Issues), "where his responsibilities included Chemical Biological Radiological & Nuclear Policy, Arms Control and Counter Proliferation and Cyber." His Ministry of Defence staff work included "Northern Ireland and global counter terrorism". He was Colonel Commandant of The Parachute Regiment from December 2008 until April 2012.[1]

Optima Defence & Security Group

The Guardian's contributor profile describes Shaw as "commander of allied forces in Basra in 2007" and "chairman of Optima Group".[2] Companies House records Jonathan David Shaw (born November 1957) as a director of Optima Defence & Security Group Limited (06823105) from 17 October 2012 to 27 August 2013, and again, as Major General Jonathan David Shaw, from 1 October 2014.[3] Members resolved to wind the company up voluntarily on 16 February 2023.[4] In 2019 the Foreign and Commonwealth Office awarded Optima a CSSF contract worth £2,212,197 for "Pakistan Change Management in Civilian Counter-Terrorism Justice" work.[5]
