Chris Saunders was senior adviser to former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.[1] Saunders has worked for the Liberal Democrats for over a decade, and has been described as one of their "leading voices on banking reform." [2]
Background
A self-styled "economic geek" (according to his Twitter account), Saunders has worked for the Liberal Democrats for several years.[3]
Saunders was previously employed as a lobbyist in the financial industry.[3] The APPC register of political consultants for June 2006 to August 2006 lists Chris Saunders as a member of staff (employed or freelance) providing consultancy services between 01.06.06 to 31.08.06 for London-based lobbying firm Cicero Consulting.[4] Although no longer available via the official APPC website, Saunders is also listed under Cicero Consulting UK Staff and clients, 1 June to 30 Nov 2005.
According to The Telegraph:
- Saunders is strong on banking reform – he has spoken out on Northern Rock – and the Lib Dems were first to call for the failed bank to be nationalised. He has also proposed buying up empty or unsellable houses to be used by the homeless and people who can't afford private rent.[3]
It had been revealed through WikiLeaks that Saunders planned to publish an anti-Cameron campaign, however this had been dropped following the death of the PM's son, Ivan.[5]
In 2012, Saunders left his post with Clegg to travel around the world with his wife.[5]
In 2013 he was listed as chief economic and business adviser to the deputy PM. [6]
As a senior adviser to Clegg, Saunders was paid an annual salary of £70,000. [7]
