Nir Barkat was elected Mayor of Jerusalem in November 2008. He is a high-tech entrepreneur millionaire and a secularist.

He rejects the idea that East Jerusalem should be the capital of a future Palestinian state and has supported controversial proposals for an area in the Palestinian East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan to be turned into an archaeological park.[1]
