Gilgal is reported to be an unofficial pseudonym for an Israeli government body "consisting of representatives of several units, charged with locating economic and financial connections between international companies and terror organizations, or state-sponsored terrorism in countries like Iran."[1]

According to Haaretz the pseudonym was invented by journalist Ronen Bergman to get around Israeli censorship and rhymes with the real Hebrew name of the unit.[2]

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon tasked Meir Dagan to set up the unit in 2001, with the mission of collecting information on and counter-acting terrorist financing.[2]
