Giles Wilkes is a former special adviser to secretary of state for business, innovation and skills Vincent Cable.[1]

He is now a leader writer for the Financial Times.

Background

After graduating from Oxford in politics, philosophy and economics, Wilkes spent a brief period in publishing before ten years working in various roles at IG Group. He has an MBA from the London Business School and in 2006 acquired a masters in global history from the London School of Economics.[2]

Wilkes sat on the advisory board of the Economic Policy Centre.[3]

Before joining Vince Cable's office, Wilkes was chief economist at the self-described "liberal" think-tank CentreForum.[4]

On 25 May 2010, Wilkes posted to his blog: "This is the last post on this blog until further notice. I have unexpectedly been offered an advisory position to the new government".[5] He started blogging again after leaving his spad role in 2014 [6], albeit more sporadically since he was appointed an FT leader writer.
