Peter Geoghegan of Democracy for Sale reported on 2 November 2026, in an analysis of US tax filings, that contributions to the American Friends of the IEA rose from $169,000 in 2024 to $439,000 in 2025, with $437,000 transferred to the UK organisation. He reported that Metro Bank founder Vernon Hill had given the charity $250,000. He also reported that British American Tobacco, a longstanding IEA donor, had given more than $15.7 million to Republican causes since November 2024 through its US subsidiary Reynolds American. An IEA spokesperson told him that it did not accept money from government sources, that it was not responsible for the actions of its donors, and that it provided ideas and insights to all political parties.[2]
